BIG BASS DOMINATE

BIG BASS DOMINATE
Doug Bronsky weighed this 61-pound cow bass at Molanr’s Landing in Hampton Bays.
Well the cow bass bite continues full throttle ahead this week off Montauk Point, while there is no shortage of smaller keeper bass from the Race and Plum Gut. The night bite rules over the daylight hours, but more importantly, especially at Montauk, the flood tide has been key. Live bait has been effective around the clock, but diamond jigs has also been effective during the daylight hours in the Montauk rips and from the rips at the Sluiceway during a brisk moving outgoing current. In addition to all the bass that awaits anglers along the East End, the bunker pods out front of Shinnecock Inlet and on eastward has been producing many fish in the high 40 pound range, all the way to a mombo striper of 61 pounds taken east of Mecox Bay on a bunker. With all that said, striped bass with a chance to nail a fish of a lifetime will be this week’s best bet. Fluke fishing remains a bit of a mystery along the south side of the Mecca as the flatties will only oblige when conditions are perfect, otherwise it is a grind and left to the anglers with skillful dexterity and experience to put a limit of keeper flatties on ice. There are plenty of smaller fluke taking up residence in most of the local rips out front and along the north side, but the keeper ratio remains low. Fluke fishing remains very good around Gardiners Island and off the Ruins and is actually getting better as the flatties begin to filter out of the Peconic’s and head east with Gardiners being their first stopover. The Shinnecock Bay fluke bite remains strong on the right tide at the right place. Porgy fishing remains as good as it gets most days with mixed size fish, while finding keeper to jumbo sea bass takes some searching at times. However, plenty of small sea bass are just about anywhere you turn over a rock. Some perseverance in such spots can usually cull out a limit of keepers among the abundance of shorts. Weakfish remain plentiful along the Middle Grounds of Peconic Bay, Noyack Bay and Greenport with the latter producing the largest weakies to 8 pounds.

My Joyce III Montauk, NY We had awesome fishing yesterday on both morning and afternoon trips. The morning trip for Sharron and friends saw a quick limit of bass to 40lbs. They kept only a few for the table and released the rest unharmed. The afternoon trip was insane fishing! We had a bunch of monsters for the Brude group. The highlight of the trip was a 53.2lb bass caught by Helen and Fran! But the best part about that was we were able to keep it alive and have it officially weighed in, and it was released unharmed to swim again. My Joyce III Montauk, NY We were honored yesterday to have our countries Wounded Warriors on board for a day of shark fishing. Unfortunately no mako's or threshers today, but everyone had a blast wrestling with a bunch of blue dogs. On the way in, we stopped for a little bass fishing, where we put away a bunch of nice fish. The biggest was 49lbs caught by the organizer Nancy. What a great day for us and our Veterans. Thanks again from the Captain and Crew!
