FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY
South Shore

A new body of fluke is producing fish like this one caught aboard the Island Princess.

For this week your best bet is fluke. The cold snap we had on the weekend brought in a new body of fish to Fire Island and Moriches inlets. From Saturday on I heard of fish to 10 pounds, with plenty of keepers being netted as well. Spearing and squid or bucktails tipped with Gulp or spearing have been the go-to baits. If you can get outside, the sea bass action is good, but you have to weed through shorts to get your limit, which is still very attainable. For dome “kid” fun, snappers and crabs are getting steadier every day on the local docks

On Saturday I got out with my son-in-law Bill Slack who was visiting from Michigan. Although quite rough, we hit the Moriches Reef in search of some sea bass and porgies. We did well with plenty of keeper size porgies, with a few sea bass in the right size class. All fish were released. On the day we had sea bass, porgies, sea robins and fluke – all shorts. We headed back in after seas began getting angry with the east winds.
