FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY
East End

Posted By Tony Salerno, August 6, 2018
Bottom fishing for porgies, sea bass and fluke is your best bet on the East End. This big sea bass was caught aboard the Shinnecock Star.
This week’s best bet will be bottom fishing for scup, sea bass and fluke and in that order. With the exception of a few slow days, the porgy season remains red hot just about anywhere there are rocks or hard bottom. Many charter and open boats are making a living with scup out in front of the Montauk Lighthouse, around Gardiners and Plum Islands. Sea bass fishing has also been good at Frisbees, Cartwright and Southwest Ledge. Run about an hour east of Southwest Ledge and you’ll find even more sea bass and true jumbos along with some cod over at Coxes Ledge. Fluke are on all the local rips mainly made up of shorts. The quality fluke remain consistent at Frisbees and at Cartwright. Although the quantity of flatties are not up to par with last season, most of the keepers taken from the deep are over 4 pounds. On a bright note, hopefully the new moon will bring new fish in the way of fluke and stripers. As for those cow bass that had taken refuge around the point for the past 3 weeks, there are still some around, but the bite is mainly at night on live eels and the incoming tide. The daytime bass bite has tailed off considerably, however soak some bunker chunks at the right place at the right tide and you’ll land a bass or two to 30 plus pounds. Bluefish are everywhere, but most consistent at Montauk Point and in the Plum Gut and Race. Find the birds. The captains are reporting that the ocean and Gardiners Bay are loaded with life, with whales and porpoises entertaining those in the ocean, while sea turtles and all sorts of exotic species are in Gardiners. A small cobia was caught and released in the Sound on Sunday.
