Donna Schepis, shown with Greg O’Connell, won the Most Fish Female division in the 56th Annual Shaner Tournament in Avalon over the weekend. RH Custom Rods team #A was top team, Jeff Stanton won the individual award and Most Fish Male, Ryan O’Connell took honors for Most Fish Youth, while Mikayla O’Brien nabbed the Most Fish Youth in the assisted cast division. Largest Fish Female was won by Lisa Amabile.
The past week of action in South Jersey was pretty steady, and up until weekend rains and wind shut down some trips, anglers were catching some solid numbers of sizeable flounder at most reef sites. There are still some triggerfish mixing it up both out front and inshore on the local jetties, and those same jetties are holding a few keeper fluke as well. The season will end in two weeks and this is typically when bigger flounder begin to hit the decks. The inshore scene was much like last week, with lots of kingfish to catch, some spot and croakers, depending on location, and tons of short fluke and togs. Surf anglers are digging in to fight a few sharks, and snapper blues to a couple of pounds or so are chasing peanut bunker in all local waters.
