FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY

Posted By Fred Golofaro, September 10, 2018

Several days of east winds, including Monday’s gale, and the possibility of a hurricane brushing the coast could foster some major changes along the surf front by next weekend. Water temperatures are on the way down and everyone we speak to is raving about the large amount of baitfish in the surf, inlets, bays and harbors. I was on the backside of Robert Moses Friday evening and found loads of white bait, peanut bunker and 4 to 5-inch mullet being harassed by small blues and a few schoolie stripers. Small blues anywhere from 1 to 4 or 5 pounds were reported from all of the South Shore inlets and along some North Shore beaches, and there was some blitz-like action with schoolie stripers reported from Shinnecock during the latter part of the week.

The fall surf scene is starting to take shape and what better way to get prepared than to attend The Fisherman’s Surf and Inshore Fishing Show this Wednesday night (9/12) at the Huntington Hilton. You can catch seminars on surf tactics and techniques by Crazy Alberto Knie, surf guide Bill Wetzel, Al Gags and young gun Matt Broderick. Doors open at 6 p.m. and seminars and workshops get underway at 6:30. The first 600 attendees get a goody bag with some great products worth more than the $20 ($15 for juniors) admission price, and everyone gets a free raffle ticket to a giant raffle featuring a Van Staal Reel and high end surf rods.
