ACTION IN THE GOM

ACTION IN THE GOM
A pair of hefty pollock jigged up on a recent trip aboard the Yankee Fleet.

There are a few bright spots on the saltwater front. The haddock and jumbo pollock fishing is very good when the weather allows you to get out. Stellwagen Bank’s Northwest corner is a safe bet to fill your freezer for the winter. Make sure to check the weather first, however, as the ocean can be very unforgiving in November. There is also a short 5-day reopening of the bluefin tuna season starting on Monday the 12th.

This is a melancholy time of the year for saltwater fishermen in New England. You never really want to give up and put your gear away for the season, but Mother Nature tends to smack you in the face when you get out of bed in the morning and the temperature is 24-degrees outside. This is the time of year I like to inventory my gear, see what needs to be repaired or serviced, what equipment needs to be retired and what I need to include on my Christmas list.
