FISH BY THE WEATHER

FISH BY THE WEATHER
Joseph Kallo made the most of the recent cold and jigged up a fine catch of panfish.
Almost more so than at any other time of the year, fishing in the winter is at the mercy of the weather. Ice fishermen need steady, sub-freezing stretches to produce a safe and solid base of ice. Cod fishermen need it cold but not stormy to not only keep the grounds clean, but also so that the boast can get a grip on where the fish can be found. Unfortunately both of these scenarios have been rather tough to come by of late, and anglers are beginning to go a little stir crazy. Those willing to travel a bit have been able to find fishable ice, but ice to the south and east remains sketchy at best.
