Fisherman subscriber Garrett Weir weighed-in this 10.96-pound blackfish at Crafty Ones Customs in Portsmouth, RI this week.
This week saw a bit of everything from big bluefin off the Cape to double-digit tog in Narragansett Bay to schoolie bass running the surf from the Canal to well inside Long Island Sound. Bluefin of recreational-class and bigger—much bigger at times—can be found roaming from P-town all the way down the backside and on to the Shipping Lanes. The commercial season remains closed but there have been giants mixed right in with those sub-73’s causing plenty of guys to get spooled this week. Bassing has been good if you want numbers, bad if you want size. Schoolies are in that “go nuts before they leave” mode with lots of low 20-inch class being caught. Blackfishing has been great most everywhere, but the bigger fish, including a bunch of double-digits, seems best in the waters from about Newport to Westbrook.
