Pluggin' River Stripers

Pluggin' River Stripers
Donald Cook fished the Great Egg Harbor River last week with hard crank baits to hook up with this 29-inch keeper striper. "He was boating in the middle reaches of the river and found some active fish," said Dave at Absecon Bay Sportsman Center.

Cold weekend and brutal weather forecast for the week has driven a few anglers back to their couches, but things were definitely looking up last week with some of the warmer weather. While bloodworms are the best bay for back bay and river stripers (still no word of any keepers at Graveling Point just yet), the bass were taking soft plastics and crank baits before the cold snap. All eyes are out for the first arriving ospreys of the season, but bunker are showing up now and this last gasp of foul winter weather should yield a few warmer days in the weeks ahead. With the first “plugged” river stripers already scored, it’s only a matter of time before those backwater stripers begin whacking at hard and soft plastics with more consistency throughout the South Jersey range.
