Just in time for this coming weekend’s big flounder tournament sponsored by Fishing Finatics, the flounder bite in and around Boston Harbor is much-improved!
This is a great time of the season in Northern New England. Freshwater trout fishing is excellent and migratory gamefish are moving in to our coastal waters every day. There was a major influx of stripers from small schoolies to just over keeper size that moved into the local area last week. Anglers are reporting outings landing as many as 40-plus bass on a wide variety of offerings from jigs to poppers to bait. With herring and mackerel in the area it shouldn’t be too long before some much larger bass arrive, too.
Flounder fishing is ever-improving with much better success this past week on both size and numbers. This is perfect timing as the 9th Annual Zobo Flounder Derby sponsored by Fishing Finatics is this coming Saturday. The top five heaviest flounder receive a cash payout and there will be a huge flounder fry (included in tournament entry) immediately following the final weigh-in at JJ Grimsby’s Pub in Melrose. There will be a cash bar and raffles at the party as well. Lines in at 6:00 a.m. with the final weigh-in taking place at 3:00 p.m. at Fishing Finatics, 90 Main Street, Everett. Entry is $35 per person and each angler may enter a single fish. Entries can be purchased at Fishing Finatics either in person or by calling the shop in advance. Get your Zobo on!

Clobbered a big school of high schoolies on a bird bust-up off Revere Beach on Wednesday 517 at low tide. Caught 20 Fish to 25 inches feeding on tiny smelt fry. Bonus was sighting several feeding Minke whales about 2 miles off Nahant between the BG buoy and Eastern Point. About 25 ft long , 4 tons but fast!
