An abundance of sand eels are fueling a hot fluke bite in parts of LI Sound.

Another week of solid fishing is what we have heard and seen. The bass and blues have been feeding on chunks of bunker just about everywhere. Big bass up to 40 pounds have been reported from one end of the Island to the other. Big bluefish up to 18 pounds have been mixing in with the bass especially towards the west end of the North Shore. Folks trolling Mojo rigs have also been finding plenty of bass and blues too. The porgy fishing continues to improve with loads of fish and some pretty big porgies being landed as well. The porgies are starting to move into their summer digs and anglers are starting to find them there. Fluking continues to be action packed as well. We heard about fish over 12 pounds in this week’s reports. Although really big fluke are few and far between there are plenty of fish that are finding their way into coolers and buckets all over the North Shore. The sand eels are fueling the fluke bite and there are plenty of them around. Black sea bass have been getting caught more and more as the season progresses. The season for black sea bass opens on June 27 so let them all go until then.
