COD BITE HEATING UP

COD BITE HEATING UP
The near-offshore cod bite is excellent right now with a good mix of cod, pollock, sea bass and assorted bottom-dwellers jumping on clams and jigs. (Photo courtesy of Big Game Fishing RI)
It may seem a bit early to be talking about cod, which many consider to be more of a winter fishery, but the early reports from boats venturing out to the cod grounds have been very good so far this season. Along with good numbers of cod up to 30 pounds these boats are reporting some pollock and tons of nice-sized black sea bass on the grounds. With the inconsistent nature of the winter weather, coupled-in with the wider variety of species which one can legally harvest in the fall, many Rhode Islanders are turning to the fall fishery earlier each season so don’t hold out too long or you’ll be the one hearing the stories of, “You should have been here yesterday!”
