STRIPERS IN THE RIPS

Posted By Tony Salerno, September 25, 2017
STRIPERS IN THE RIPS
Action with big stripers, like this one caught aboard the charter boat My Joyce in the Montauk rips, heated up again as seas subsided on the weekend.
Although we never really got to meet Jose per say, he did get close enough to louse things up from Tuesday into Friday. Fluke season is now in the books and indeed it was one heck of a fluke season, particularly along the south side of Mecca, ending in grand style. Moving forward, the weekend was when the boats got back into action and that is just what they found, especially on Saturday night and into Sunday as cow bass continue to swarm the local rips with most fish starting at 25 pounds and stretching out to 40 plus pounds. Live eels and spot were the baits of choice s all the charter and most private boats scored with boat limits. While the waves along the south side of Montauk were mountainous this week, fishing inside the Peconics provided a continuation of a solid weakfish bite, bluefish, quality scup, tasty kingfish and blowfish despite the wind. The Peconic Star fished inside a couple days this week and found a good bite of weakfish and scup. Fishing in the Sound was also productive this week with sea bass ruling the roost on the rocky lairs, while albies and bluefish dominated the Sound beaches. Sea bass and porgies have become the bread and butter for most of the open and charter boats and with the exception of being a bit picky on Sunday, the fishing remains grand on both Forks and will indeed be a best bet this week as will be the striped bass that are providing exceptional heart pounding excitement. With such a variety of species on the menu, now is the time to get out there and enjoy a day of bottom or top water fishing. With blackfish and cod season just around the corner, life just doesn’t get much better.
