MONSTER BLUES

Posted By J. B. Kasper, October 2, 2017
MONSTER BLUES
The crew of the 100-foot party boat Golden Eagle on Sunday reported that the weather was very nasty out in the ocean Saturday night but they were able to pick at jumbo blues up to 20 pounds, all on bait. For those looking for a Dream Boat entry, the monster blues hopefully have arrived!
Weather problems during what has been described as the “in between time” (in between fluke fishing and striper fishing) continued along the northern coast. Heck, look at it this way, it could have been a lot worse since that storm got pushed out to sea by an old fashion cold front. While plenty of fishermen boycotted the week, the reality is those that fished found some good fishing. While the excellent bottom fishing dominated by porgies, tog, “catch and release” sea bass, fluke and ling continued, several other fisheries provided some good and improving fishing. Schools of bluefish kept up their onslaught on baitfish populations. In some places this saw bonito and albacore mixing in with the slammers, while others saw the catch spiced up by mixed size stripers and weakfish (you remember them) proving excellent light tackle fishing. Some of those weakfish were in the 5- to 8-pound class and if you are into eating, you had no problem catching your limit! We even got a couple of reports of boats sailing offshore in-between the weather and scoring yellowfin, longfin and mahi. With cooler weather predicted this week, better make sure your gear is in shape. Double-digit size bluefish showed up over the weekend too, with the Golden Eagle out of Belmar getting on to the monsters during a night chunk trip.

Got this Wednesday in Raritan Bay at the tide change in the afternoon. Nothing earlier in the day. Belly was empty. Big waves 1 feet from the rocks! Fun time. Hit on yellow shad rig.
