SURF SCENE IMPROVING

Posted By Fred Golofaro, October 9, 2017
Finally a week where the surf wasn’t battered by the effects of major storms passing offshore of Long Island. That helped cure access problems on some beaches, and it also seems like there has been a spike in surf action, at least on the East End of the Island. While it is far from dramatic, there have been enough bass, albies and in some areas blues, to warrant putting in some effort. Montauk has seen a pick of bass into the mid-20-pound class along the north and south sides, and there have been some fish on the sand beaches through Southampton as well. Both Shinnecock and Moriches are seeing a pick of bass, and the North Fork has been the scene of good action with albies, small stripers and some blues. Further west on the North Shore, shops are reporting an upturn in bass action, though it is dominated by mostly small fish. Even the Fire Island area saw some improvement this week and that is good news given the South Shore Classic is slated to run from noon Friday, October 13 through noon Sunday, October 15. Check out the ad in this week’s issue for details. The following week, sees the South Shore Surf Spectacular hosted by Jones Beach Fishing Station take place October 20-22.
