BABYLON CUP RESULTS

Posted By Fred Golofaro, October 30, 2017
Just when it looked like the fall run was building some momentum, it seemed to take a step back in many areas this week. Very little in the way of consistent action in most places, with the North Fork one of the few exceptions where a mix of bass, big blues and albies continue to keep casters entertained. Elsewhere, much of the action is made up of small and even smaller bass, with very few blues in the mix.
Bass and blues continue to hang along the Rhode Island coast, offering hope that those fish will make their way along our shores. Hopefully, Sunday and Monday’s storm will help get things moving again. Sunday’s wind and rain apparently had some shops shut down early, and we were unable to get reports from several quarters this week.
This past weekend’s Town of Babylon Surf Fishing Cup started with a nice shot of bass Friday evening, and ended with a couple of quality bluefish. Fishing in between was frustrating with the wind from an approaching storm that hit Sunday morning. All five winning striped bass were caught during the opening hours of the tournament, all on bunker chunks. Two teen-size blues were caught to round out this year’s scoring. This year’s winners are:
Striped Bass
1st Frank Shortmeyer 20.1
2nd Anthony Keller 19.5
Anthony Keller was also the winner of the largest released striped bass.
3rd Chris Mulhall 18.7
4th Jerry Estelle 16.25
5th Pete Lacata 14.6
Bluefish
1st Charlie Vollmer 14.3
2nd Terry Murburger 14
Many thanks to the Town of Babylon, Councilman Lindsay Henry, his assistant Kathy Vidal, and the TOB Parks and Recreation Department for helping to make this a success. Kudos to LIBBA and Paumonak Surfcasters for hosting this event and serving as the tournament weigh station. And a big thank you to all the sponsors who donated gifts and tackle for the awards and raffle.
