FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY
South Shore

Posted By Tom Melton, November 6, 2017
The fall striper run is in full swing along the South Shore. Diamond jigging, trolling, live bunker and clam chum are all in play for boat anglers.
Stripers, stripers, stripers! The fall run looks like it really kicked it up a notch with bass on sand eels, mackerel and bunker pods outside Fire Island Inlet. Over in Moriches, the inlet is producing solid action as well. For this week’s best bet, we have three options for bass. The first would be to head outside Fire Island and either locate a pod of bunker and snag, re-hook and drop, or locate the sand eels and mackerel outside in 35 to 50 feet of water and drop an A47 or A67 jig with white or green tail. The second option would be live baiting – eels or spot – in Moriches Inlet on the outgoing tide. For this, use a simple egg sinker and 4/0 to 5/0 circle hook from the very beginning of the out. I like a leader of 40 to 60-inches. As the current increases, increase the weight of the egg sinker. The third option, and this is a fun one, is to fish the back-bay areas of Moriches and deep into the north side of Great South with soft plastic shads. There are acres of bass mauling peanut bunker from real small to 30 inches making for a great day on light tackle.

The Bass continue to dominate the south shore waters, From Long Beach to the Rockaways Trolling was the name of the game this past Saturday Nov 11. Waves were 1 to 3 and we trolled at 5.2 knots 35 to 40 ft of water gave the best results. We used nothing but White and Yellow Mo Jo lures. We started on the incoming tide and had plenty of action. By early afternoon my son had landed this big boy which put as at our limit. Other anglers used eels and clams but did not produce the same results
