ICE ACTION HEATS UP

ICE ACTION HEATS UP
Mike Kolodzeij found good ice on New Year’s Day and battled this 41-inch northern pike that whacked an extra-large shiner.
Bitter cold at New Year’s coupled with the blizzard (sorry, “bombogenesis”) last Thursday has put a serious damper on participation. However, ice fishermen are already scoring big on ponds and lakes throughout the region; put and take trout areas are producing tasty treats through the ice, while larger lakes are becoming safer for those looking to hunt down giants like northern pike and muskies. Show season kicks off this week with the Garden State Outdoor Sports Show in Edison; meanwhile the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council meeting was postponed last week due to the snow. It will be held this Thursday, January 11 at 5 p.m. at the Stafford Twp. Municipal Building at 260 East Bay Avenue, Manahawkin, NJ. The council is expected to take final action on a limited Wave One fishery for black sea bass in February following the recent joint sessions of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and Mid Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAMFC) in December. States have an opportunity to provide a limited recreational fishery during the 28 days of February, but only if they’re willing to give up some allowable fishing days later in the spring. At the November meeting of the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council, it was decided that a special meeting of the state’s sea bass advisory committee would convene for review before Christmas to allow anglers and business owners to weigh in publicly on the concept this week in Manahawkin. At 7:15 following the regular New Jersey Council meeting, a public hearing on Draft Addendum XXX to the Black Sea Bass Fishery Management Plan will commence.
