STRIPERS GETTING ACTIVE

Posted By Jim Hutchinson, Jr., March 12, 2018
STRIPERS GETTING ACTIVE
A few hundred yards out of Oyster Creek this past weekend, Brian Lindner hit his first keeper striped bass of the 2018 season by boat on a pearl All Gag plastic. “We were going to flounder fish but saw birds working and bunker busting,” Brian said, adding “never got the worms and chum logs down.” The crew caught a bunch, all between 24 and 28 inches in length with this one just making it to keeper status.
Despite Mother Nature’s weekly fits of rage, anglers are still getting out on the grounds for a few striped bass. This week Matt Calabria brought registered the first reported keeper of the 2018 Raritan Bayshore season, while over the weekend Brian Lindner checked in with one of the first boat catches of the year outside of Oyster Creek on Barnegat Bay. While yet another nor’easter is set to roar through the region this week with more snow in the forecast, the weekend weather predictions show a warming trend on the way which could kickstart the action on the bays and rivers. Shad catches are being reported in the lower tidal areas of the Delaware River, which means striped bass heading upriver to spawn should be appearing soon enough. For hire boats have struggled to put together trips with the wind on weekends, and hopefully after Thursday’s New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council meeting porgies should be back in the mix for those heading out for cod and ling. The big Saltwater Fishing Expo kicks off Friday at a new location, the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center (just off Route 287 and the New Jersey Turnpike at Exit 10 in Edison, NJ). The show was formerly in Somerset but moves to a bigger location in Edison at 97 Sunfield Avenue, which should mean more to see and do. Show opens noon on Friday, March 16 and goes until 8 p.m. On Saturday, March 17 the show runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday it’s from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be sure to stop by The Fisherman booth (#462). We’re running low on Star Rods pliers for new and renewing subscribers, so be sure to make ours the first booth you visit when you walk through the door!
