TOGGIN’ UNDERWAY
Shark River Inlet boats like the Big Mohawk out of Belmar are back on the tautog grounds
Fishing along the northern coast is slowly building, despite the recent weather spats. To be sure it’s nowhere near prime time, however bass fishing is on the upswing along the lower side of the bay, the piers along the lower Hudson River and the usual backwater spots. As of this report the fish being caught are all local fish with shorts dominating the catch along with an occasional keeper taking mainly worms, hard to get clams and bunker. We even got reports of some winter flounder being caught several places. On the bottom fishing front water temps are very slowly coming up and we got the first reports of some better numbers of tog being caught. More boats are starting to go in the water at marinas and this should boost our reports in the next few weeks. Now all we need is some cooperation from a very fickle Mother Nature.
