FISHING LOGS: New Jersey & Delaware Bay
Central New Jersey

Posted By Karen Wall, April 9, 2018
The Fisherman’s “Beach Talk” reporter Nick Honachefsky bundled up in un-springlike 30-degree weather for a single winter flounder. “And it was worth it,” Nick said later at the filet table. With a little stretch of warmer weather, winter flounder and striped bass should both respond positively for anglers.
While the cold temperatures continue to be a serious drag on the fishing, there are some positive signs, including multiple reports of birds diving on bait along the beach. The weather is still being a real pain, with wind disrupting what otherwise might be great days. There is action to be had if your focus isn’t on keeper bass; white perch are a good option and you don’t even have to leave the river. Get some bloodworms and wet a line, even winter flounder are starting to bite a little more in parts of Barnegat Bay and in the Toms River.

Lots of action here in Little Egg Harbor, 37 striped bass caught all on bloods, a few nice perch in the mix this day, a few more during the week on some short outing fighting the winds, all catches from land. My wife Terri pulled in this nice one which made her birthday better than she wished for, first for her this season and looking for many more.

Plenty of dead trout were recently stocked in the Manasquan River. Either the stocking trucks pumps broke down or the trout didn't survive being dropped from a bridge into very shallow water. Hopefully its not a sign of things to come for the rest of the trout stocking season.

This past Saturday I pulled in 6 Stripers ( shorts ) up to 23". Fished Old Bridge beach and action was quick. All the fish were caught within an hour on clams. Fishing should open up in a week once that water warms up.
