BIRDPLAY & BLUES

BIRDPLAY & BLUES
FinAtics in Ocean City received this photo from Mike Post that was taken from 12th Street and the Boardwalk in Ocean City around 11a.m. on Friday, a scene that repeated itself from Avalon and Seaside north to Barnegat Light into the weekend. Could big bluefish be far off?
The past week was indeed a busy one and social media was abuzz over the newly imposed sea bass and fluke regulations; the season for flounder will begin on May 25 and run until September 22, with three fish per angler at 18 inches. Sea bass will be allowed to be taken from May 15 to June 21 with a 10-fish limit at 12.5 inches. The beaches of South Jersey began to dance this past week as several shops reported crazy bird play from Atlantic City to Stone Harbor. Gannets were in full force on bait, some shops telling of bunker and herring in large schools showing up, with sporadic large bluefish being reported. Inshore, small bass continue to be on the forefront, and a few keeper fish have been found as anglers get out there and fish. Perch are still hitting bloodworms as angler’s drift backwaters, and slow, sporadic reports of inshore blackfish are spreading as more and more anglers get up on the structure and float green crabs.

Fished the end of the incoming at Corsons inlet Friday night. It was very windy and couldn’t see the surface too well and the wind was catching my line and I couldn’t get to cast the distance I wanted. Didn’t hook up with any blues or Striper but on my 1st cast I landed a nice size bunker. Soon after I caught another. Funny thing is I didn’t hook either one. They simply ran into my line which got caught up in their fins. My guess is it must be loaded up with bunker in the back. I released both. Can’t wait to get back there.
