New England Fishing Explodes!
Every year, there’s a turning point in April, when several species catch fire at the same time. And that turning point happened this past week; with excellent trout fishing, stripers to 30-plus pounds at the herring runs, lots of big largemouth bass, tanker smallies, giant lake trout, inshore codfish, massive brown trout and that’s only just the beginning. Over the coming week we should see a lot more inshore blackfish and a much stronger showing of fresh striped bass migrating in from the south and west. Water temps from Norwalk to Cape Cod are either flirting with 50 degrees, or have already reached this magic number… basically, it’s ‘go time!’

If you have a boat that is equipped to make an offshore run, your best bet for this week would be the closest haddock grounds. The early season haddock are usually found on top on the banks in shallow water. Fish the high spots on places on Stellwagen Bank, Jeffreys Ledge and Platts Bank. Dont forget to check out the inshore ledges Stone Ledge, Cape Porpoise Peaks, Tantas Ledge or any of the rockpiles south of Isle of Shoals. All those places can hold haddock, especially early on in the season. It can save you a lot of fuel and steaming time.

Captain Rich from Black Rose Fishing Charters told me the first week of his charter season will be dedicated to haddock and he is anxious to get started. Starting on April 23rd he will be sailing out of South Yarmouth on the Cape targeting that fantastic squid fishery. After that the scup season opens up followed by sea bass on May 18th. He has a lot to offer his charters due to the fact he sails out of both sides of the Cape Cod Canal and is rigged to fish for a variety of inshore of offshore species.

Jackson from Belsans Bait and Tackle reported the early season trout fishing for both rainbow and browns has been great in Long and Little Ponds in Plymouth. Lily Pond has been giving up some decent pickerel landings. It wont be long before the first keeper flounder of the year is landed the saltwater fishing season gets into high gear. Jake told me that May 1st is usually the start of steady flounder activity. The store is open seven days a week and is fully stocked for the spring fishing season.

Martha from Surfland told me they are now open 7 days a week. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The only fishing reports Martha has heard of are the holdover striped bass that are being caught on the freshwater side of the Amelia Earhardt Dam in Boston. There have been reports that alewives have arrived at the Byfield Dam which is a very good sign of things to come. There have been no local reports of shad as of our phone conversation on Sunday, but that could change by next week.
