New Jersey & Delaware Bay - Central New Jersey Fishing Reports
New Jersey & Delaware Bay Video Fishing Forecast April 18, 2024
Barnegat Bay Drum, Sea Isle Weakies & First Fluke
The good bad, the bad, and the ugly of this week's 30-minute video fishing forecast for the New Jersey, Delaware Bay region begins with 3 minutes of bad news, as yet another dead humpback washes ashore on LBI. NOAA Fisheries says, quote, “no whale deaths have been attributed to offshore wind activities” yet given the actual evidence, the court of public opinion begs to know, “have offshore wind activities been found NOT attributing to whale deaths”? They might be ugly, but boy do they put up a good fight; details on the black drum invasion in Barnegat Bay and a first-hand look from this past Saturday as Jenni offers up some tactical advice in her weekly Open Boat segment. The good news is actually great, as the first summer flounder reports are coming in from South Jersey and Delaware, also weakfish arrive just in time for a new Limited Batch announcement from the folks at NLBN. Details on that offer, plus slot stripers on the prowl out front, and more jumbo releases from the rivers; with 12 days left in the April tautog fishery we have two more “20s” to report this week, with a solid weather outlook for the 4/20 weekend.
Anglers are getting antsy as they wait for consistent weather conditions to allow for proper fishing. The striped bass continue to flood bays, canal, and estuaries. Grab the jumbo bloodworms now to get in on the action. Smaller lures like white soft plastics work as well. The first reports of bass off the beach came in. Clams are working well. Drum are biting in the bay and off jetties. Clam is also the bait of choice for them. Blackfish action has been hit or miss with some tides better than others. Its a good idea to grab green crabs for them. The Sea Girt and Axel are producing some.

Striper action in the Raritan remains great. Anglers are killing it in the bay. A couple of small stripers have been reported in and around the inlet, but more fish are moving in from the Raritan. Cod fishing remains decent. Tilefish trips should be starting soon so look for local boats if interested.

Frank at Gabriel Tackle said boats heading out for blackfish have been doing well. Some nice fish have been landed at the Axel. Blackfishing in the canal remains good with the bait of choice being sandworms, clams, or green crabs. They seem to like the softer baits this time of year. The striper bite in Barnegat Bay remains good on bloodworms, but they are finally hitting lures more consistently. Frank said, Where are the bluefish? Hopefully they will show up soon in the bay,. Reports of winter flounder being landed at the bridge and canal. The Raritan Bay bite has been good with some nice size stripers landed and good reports from the Delaware, so it might be worth a road trip.

Pete at Charlies Bait & Tackle said plenty of fish were caught this past week, that is when the weather cooperated. Both bass and drum were landed in the back. A few bass were reported off the beach and further south some drum also came up from the beach. Bloodworms and small plastics work well for the bass while drum are biting on clam. A couple winter flounder were caught. The weather is a problem causing fluctuating water temperatures, but once it stabilizes the bite should stay consistent. They are stocked up on bloodworms and clam.

Liza at Creekside Outfitters said stripers have been reported on the eastside of the bay with a few coming from the west. They are all schoolies. Creeks and estuaries are holding good numbers too. Bloodworms are working well for the mainland side for stripers. A 28-inch keeper was caught Sunday morning. The bad weather and the blow slowed the tog bite making it hard for boats to hit wrecks. Three keeper blackfish were reported from the south jetty rocks in Barnegat Light. Once the weather clears up, the fishing should break wide open.
