October 21, 2019:
Kyle at J&B Tackle told me that those who made it out before the big storm fared well with yellowfin just south of the Tails and the 100-Square. The mahi bite was reportedly very good as well, which helped fill some of the gaps in the tuna action. Kyle said that boats are continuing to go looking for tuna and swords when the weather allows. Buddy-boats are the name of the game this time of year, as nobody likes being 100 miles from home in autumn seas all alone.

Kyle at J&B Tackle said that the only boats that he knew of fishing last week's storm were some commercial tilefish operations with big enough vessels to manage the seas. There is a short window to get offshore this week, and Kyle has a couple of his customers planning on fishing it.

Kyle at J&B Tackle reported some spotty canyon fishing this week from the Tails to West Atlantis. As Kyle put it, there were some yellowfin to be had, but most boats settled for mahi, albacore tuna, and a shot at some swordfish. According to what Kyle had heard, the better chunk fishing was supposedly to the east in Veatch and Hydrographer. If we are going to see a decent fall bite develop, it should be in the next few weeks as the water temps start to change.

Kyle at J&B Tackle told me that the unsettled offshore weather conditions kept just about everyone out of the canyons last week. Thankfully, the local bluefin were making up for it, providing action throughout the week until becoming a bit quiet just before the weekend. Again, these bluefin are following the scallop boats which thinned out considerably by week's end.

Kyle at J&B Tackle reports some good action down around the Tails early in the week. Kyle's father brought a charter down that way for a pile of 15- to 18-pound mahi, some albacore, and two nice swordfish. There were reportedly yellows and a bigeye caught by other boats that were working the area. The Hudson canyon also had some good action with yellows and a few bigeye last week. Wahoo made a good showing around the Dip, where one boat managed to pluck three of them (along with several bite-offs) from a weed line. Kyle said that wahoo love schooling up, and making several passes by a weed line or other structure can result in multiple hookups. Kyle said that the latest breaking news was that of a daytime bluefin chunk bite around the west bank of Butterfish Hole and the CIA grounds, where fish were found to be shadowing the scallopers.
