Misquamicut Bait & Tackle

July 16, 2018:
Misquamicut Bait and Tackle reported that those anglers drifting off of the beaches have been doing well for fluke, black sea bass and scup. Fluke are spread out along the beaches and mixed by size so it's often necessary to pick through a bunch short fish to find a few keepers. Black sea bass have been plentiful, and many anglers have been limiting-out on sea bass while drifting for fluke. Scup are on pretty much all of the reefs and rock piles and are providing some good fishing for those fishing from shore. Striped bass fishing has been decent numbers-wise, but there haven't been very many large fish reported locally in the past couple of weeks. There have been some bluefish mixing-in with the school bass in the breachway and along the beaches.

Over at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle they have been hearing reports of pretty good fluke fishing off of the local beaches. There are quite a few short fish around but if you are willing to work though some shorts there are keepers to be had. Black sea bass fishing has been very good but you may need to move to deeper water (60-plus feet) if you want to target them. Striped bass fishermen have been catching locally but the fish have been on the small side. Reports from Block Island have been good for bass, and those making the run to the island have generally been rewarded with some bigger fish. Not much for reports of bluefish locally. Scup fishing has been very good for both boat fishermen and for those fishing from the breachway or beaches.

Tony at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle said that scup fishing has been excellent with some really nice-sized fish being taken right from the rocks. If you boat or kayak and can access the rock piles off of the beaches the scup fishing is even better. Fluke fishing has been pretty good along the beaches and out at Block Island. Black sea bass fishing seems to be picking up with more keeper sea bass showing up as by-catch for the fluke fishermen. Striped bass fishing by boat was very good this past week in the Watch Hill reefs and along the back side of Fishers Island. Some fish in the 30- to 40-pound class were reported from those areas. Surfcasters have been having some luck with small to medium bass after dark and in the early mornings.

Over at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle they have been getting some really good reports from the scup fishermen. The fish are in thick and they are big! Fluke reports from the beaches were pretty good this past week. Anglers are catching a lot of fish but many are under the size limit. Those putting in their time though are being rewarded with some keepers. Black sea bass opened this past Sunday with a 3-fish limit. Striped bass fishing has been pretty good locally, but most of the fish seem to be on the small side.

The report from Misquamicut Bait and Tackle was that fluke fishing off of the local beaches was pretty good this past week with a lot of fish in the 4- to 5-pound range being caught. Fluke fishing during the week was also good out around Block Island, but the dogfish moved in and made things difficult for the weekend. Striped bass fishing has been decent locally with some fish into the mid 30-inch range being reported from the beaches and the breachways. Fishing for scup is really starting to pick up with both boaters and shore fishermen getting in on the action.
