Misquamicut Bait & Tackle

October 15, 2018:
Rick at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle reported that local fishing had its ups and down this past week primarily due to the weather, but overall things have been going well. There are a lot of small bass chasing bait along the beach with bluefish mixed-in here and there. False albacore are still around in good numbers and there are been reports of them being caught right off of the breachway nearly every day. Sea bass fishing is still very good and tautog fishing is really starting to heat up and should only get better in the coming weeks as water temperatures drop.

Mike at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle said that fishing was very good for the majority of this past week but slowed down a bit over the weekend. Surf fishermen continue to do well with striped bass, bluefish and false albacore from the breachways, rocks and sandy beaches. On some days the false albacore seem to stay just out of range from shore frustrating the surf crowd, but they have been coming in close often enough to make targeting them worthwhile. Boat fishermen are finding good numbers of black sea bass off of the beaches but expect to pick though a lot of short fish to find your keepers. Tautog fishing is starting to heat up with both boaters and shore fishermen getting into some fish.

Mike at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle said that surf fishing was really good this past week with customers finding plenty of striped bass ranging in size from schoolies right up to the 25- to 30-pound range. Fishing for false albacore has also been excellent right along the beaches both from shore and by boat. There is an incredible amount of bait around which is fueling some exciting top water fishing in the early mornings. Fishing for black sea bass and scup is still very good but you need to look for structure in deeper water. There were even reports of a few fluke being caught out around block again this past week. Tautog fishing is just starting to pick up and will continue to improve as the move further into October.

When I spoke with Rick at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle late on Sunday morning he said that albies, striped bass and bluefish had been chasing bait up and down the beach since sun-up. Fishing has been excellent right from the beach for the past few days with anglers catching a mix of false albacore, bass and bluefish. Most of the striped bass have been on the small side, but there were a few fish over 40 inches reported over the weekend. Boaters are still doing well with black sea bass and scup off of the beaches with just a few fluke. No one has been out for tautog locally but that fishery should start picking up soon.

Mike at Misquamicut Bait and Tackle reported that surf fishing was very good through most of last week with big surf and strong winds kicking the fall season off with a bang. Striped bass and some bluefish have been feeding on mullet and peanut bunker all along the beaches and up in the breachways and salt ponds. As conditions improved late last week the boats got back out and found a few fluke and plenty of sea bass and scup. Scup fishing is even still very good from shore right off of the breachways and beaches. Just a few reports of green bonito this past week so it's likely they may have move on and the false albacore have yet to show.
