Misquamicut Bait & Tackle

September 24, 2018:
It's what you'd expect for the end of September and beginning of October reports Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly as bass, blues, false albacore and some bonito can be had from the South County beaches and breachways. There is a solid mix of baitfish in the surf including bunker (peanuts and mediums), silversides, bay anchovies and mullet.

Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly reports that the surf was big this week, but with all the bait moving along the shoreline the surf fishing was good to very good at times. There has been a mix of bass and blues feeding on peanut bunker, silversides, mullet and bay anchovies moving out of the breachway. If you're looking for scup, they can still be caught in and around the breachway.

Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly passed along word of a ton of small baitfish—peanuts, silversides and bay anchovies—as well as the first signs of mullet in the ponds and breachways. You can find 2- to 4-pound blues hammering the bait along the shore all day, and there have been pods of bonito popping up at the West Wall, Quonny and Weekapaug. While not a ton of bones have been hooked from shore, they are drawing in crowds of hopeful anglers.

Mike at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly reports schools of bonito have been running the shoreline on down to Watch Hill. While most of the action has been by boat, a few surfcasters have hooked into them when they come close enough to shore to make some casts. No word on albies n the mix just yet, but they should (hopefully_ arrive any day now. Bassing has been ok in the breachway and should only get better as the load of bait from the back pond starts dumping out.

I spoke with Mike over at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly on Sunday and he said there is still a ton of small bait in the area, both in the back pond as well as along all of the South County oceanfront. This has been holding a lot of small schoolie bass, but there was a shot of fish to about 36 inches this week in the breachway. The Watch Hill reefs have a lot of large bass, but they have yet to move into the surf in any good numbers. Porgy fishing still remains excellent pretty much everywhere, and there was word of false albacore and bonito being caught from and around the West Wall.
