Misquamicut Bait & Tackle

June 11, 2018:
Tony at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly told me that the surf was really weedy the last few days, and at times it made the fishing difficult. Fishermen are still getting some bass, but you have to weed though the salad to get them. There have been some large bass caught "just offshore" by boat, so bug fish are in the area.

Tony at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly reports that striper action has been decent. Fish are being caught both off the walls of the breachway and the surrounding beaches. Overall the fish are still in the 20- to just about 30-inch range, but a few larger fish have been landed. A few bluefish have popped up here and there, but no big numbers just yet. The annual Spring Surf Fishing Club Challenge takes place this coming weekend, and the shop will be open until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday nights for any late afternoon or evening catches.

It was a busy Sunday morning at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly when Tony Pocchia filled me in on this week's action, and the big word remains striped bass. The breachway has been loaded with schoolies and the occasional keeper for those who can fish through the shorts. Both jigs and swimmers like the SP Minnow have been lures of choice with not much action coming on bait, surprisingly. The occasional 7- to 8-pound bluefish is also being landed, mixed-in with the bass.

Tony Pocchia at Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly said the local striper action is "HOT" right now in South County. Bass form 10 inches all the way up to 36 pounds have been caught in the surf. Late week even saw some heavy bird activity over fish and bait off the Andrea. The breachway has been best on the high outgoing as the warm water starts dumping out, and some very large silversides have been spotted with bass feasting on them. On Sunday morning an angler was tossing an SP Minnow into the breachway and was rewarded with four nice schoolies as well as three big sea robins—too bad he wasn't a Fisherman subscriber as he might have been able to get on the Dream Boat leader board as we added sea robin for the 2018 challenge.

Misquamicut Bait & Tackle in Westerly reports another week of improved striper fishing both in the breachway as well as along the beaches. Nothing too large has been reported just yet, but there are good numbers of schoolies with the occasional just-keeper being caught.
