At the Reel Seat, Eric said the striped bass bite seems to have turned on at last. The boat anglers are catching fish into the 40-pound class, with the best action from the Shrewsbury Rocks to Deal. Where you find bunker pods, folks are doing well livelining, but trolling mojos also is working well, he said. Bluefish have finally hit the inlet in good numbers, with fish from 2 to 3 pounds up to 12 to 13 pounds. Bucktails, jigs, shads and SP Minnows all work well. The popper bite has been a little less productive but should improve as the weather warms up. Despite the presence of the bluefish, the schoolie bass are still hanging around in the Manasquan River so they add to the action. South of the inlet, there are stripers being caught on the beach. Bait is taking the bigger fish, while jigs and other artificials are picking up smaller fish up to 34 inches. The bottom fishing guys have reported there are some sea bass at the usual spots, including the Shark River Reef, but it's not lights-out fishing just yet. Fluke fishermen should get their rigs ready, as all reports say there are tons of fluke in the river, which should bring a good start to the season.
