Red Top Sporting Goods

July 16, 2018:
In case you missed all the live posts and status updates of personal-bests on social media, Greg McSharry at Red Top in Buzzards Bay confirmed that big striped bass moved into the Canal in force this week. As he put it, "It's been an incredible week here in Canal land as lots of fish piled into the canal. There's an entire food chain going on right now as the heavy rain from last week started to flush out herring fry from the runs. On the back side of the front the wind went northeast for a few days, coupled with big new moon tides, and BOOM!! That got the mackerel all fired up and on the move. The macks on the move got the bass all fired up, and, well, you get the idea! All sizes of bass were and are being caught. When it's all-out craziness like this you can catch an 8-pound fish on one cast, and then on your next cast catch a 40-pounder. It's a site to behold."

Greg McSharry from Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay sent me an email this week to say that, "If there's one pattern that's really starting to show itself in the Canal this year, it's a feast or famine type of bite. By this I mean that if you choose the right spot then you're in the money, choose poorly and you go fishless. There really hasn't been any those one end to the other big blitz's that have made the canal famous the last 4-5 years. The folks who feasted well this week were the ones whom fished the very east end of the Canal. It was shoulder to shoulder type of fishing and macks and sea herring had the bass coming in on the west tide for a meal."

Greg McSharry over at Red Top in Buzzards Bay reports that the June full moon went out with a bang! Customers were waiting for the shop to open on Sunday to weigh fish, with one of them looking to go over 50 pounds. Well, once it hit the official scale it registered 50.75 pounds—a legit Canal trophy! Plenty of 30- and 40-pound fish were also landed in the Canal this past week, a sign of some good fish finally arriving locally. Hopefully the bite continues through this "off tide" week and holds up into the new moon the week after.

Greg McSharry over at Red Top in Buzzards Bay said there is word of some large bass staging outside the west end of the Canal, hopefully preparing to head on in. Earlier in the week there was a decent bite in the Canal, but it slowed as the week progressed. With bait in the east end, and a full moon on the horizon, the hopes are high of some great action somewhere in the middle in the very near future.

Greg McSharry over at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay said that the June new moon in the Canal was "interesting." The week started off slow, but it picked up midweek. Reports of mackerel, herring and squid had the east end on fire for a few days in the strong southwest wind. On Friday the wind switched and the bite moved more towards the middle. They weighed-in bass up to the mid 30-pound range this week. The folks who bounced the bottom seemed to hook-up more with the bigger fish, but some good fish were caught on topwater, too.
