Jack's Bait and Tackle

November 20, 2017:
Tony over at Jack's Bait & Tackle in City Island told us that there are lots of stripers and blackfish around now. The stripers have been all over the Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges as well as the City Island Bridge. Anglers have been finding the bass from both boat and shore. Bloodworms and fresh bunker chunks have been producing and so have artificials like swim shads and plugs. The bigger blackfish have been in the deeper water this past week. The shop did weigh in a nice tog of 7.5 pounds for a shop customer this week. Tony added that the shallows are still loaded with blackfish but they are mostly shorts. The shop continues their Fall Sale with 10 to 20% off most items in the shop. The sale goes until Christmas Eve. 718-885-0236 PJ on the boat (917 596 4547)

Tony over at Jack's Bait & Tackle in City Island told us that they have been seeing lots of porgies still in the area. The striper and blackfish bites have both been picking up this week. The bass are chasing bait on top and topwater poppers have been accounting for a lot of the catch. The blackfish bite has been getting better but there are still lots of short fish in the mix. The tog are still hanging in the shallow water structure. The shop is still running their Fall Sale with 10 to 20% off just about everything in the shop until Christmas Eve.

Rob over at Jack's Bait & Tackle in City Island told us that they are still seeing porgies locally. Rob did say that it looks like they are starting to move out though. Blackfish are providing lots of action with more keepers showing in the mix. Rob said that he's head of a short to keeper ratio of 10 to 1 this week. Stripers have been moving in this week. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon have been the best times to find stripers. Fish up to 36 inches were taken this week. A few small blues have been running around but nothing to write home about. The shop's 20% off Fall Sale will be running until Christmas Eve so there's still plenty of time to get in on it.

When I spoke to Rob over at Jack's Bait & Tackle in City Island he told us that there are still a ton of porgies being caught. He also said that the weakfish that have been in the area seem to have moved on for the season. He added that it was so nice to see them this year after several years of dismal catches. There have been some good catches of sea bass this week. They are still mixing in with the porgies. I hope everyone knows that the bag limit for black sea bass climbs to 10 fish per angler as of November 1. Schoolie bass have been more active this week. They have been hitting topwater plugs and jigs for the most part. Fish up to 30 inches have been reported back into the shop from the local marinas. Bluefish have been somewhat quiet with some cocktail size fish still around. A few albies have been around still and are providing lots of action for those anglers targeting them. Blackfish have been taking up most of the fishing effort again this week. Most of the fish are short but there have been a few decent fish weighed in this week. Shop customer Richie said that he went blackfishing on Friday. Richie said that he landed over 30 fish but only had one keeper of 8-pounds. Hot spots for tog have been both Pea and Huckleberry Islands and Hens and Chickens. Rob said that Hens and Chickens has been red hot for tog this week. Rob added that the shop is still running their Fall Sale with 20% off everything in the store.

John over at Jack's Bait & Tackle in City Island told us that they're still seeing lots of porgies around. The fishing has been nothing less than red hot with Pea Island, Huckleberry Island and Execution Light being really productive. He also said that the blackfish have been mixing in with the porgies this week. The blacks have been hitting on both green and Asian crabs. The Connecticut shore has been really productive with fish over 8 pounds. There are still some good shots at weakfish too. Small bass and blues have been at the Throgs Neck Bridge, Stepping Stones Light and Execution as well. The local docks have also been giving up quite a few schoolies. John said to "Get out and get them while they're still around cause it won't be too much longer before they're gone for the season".
