Miller Place Bait & Tackle

June 18, 2018:
Jim at Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported Crane's Neck and Old Field are a porgy anglers delight. Nice size schools of summer flatties are occupying buoys 9 and 11. However, be prepared to weed out loads of shorts to find a keeper. Bass are being trolled on Mojo rigs at the Middle Grounds and keepers are averaging 30 to 32-inches.

Sue over at Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported that there are tons of fluke locally but most are shorts. She said you'll have to weed through all the small fish to get a keeper. Buoy 11 and buoy 9 have both been the spots to target the flatties this week. She also said that there has been a decent shot of stripers at buoy 11. They've been taken on the troll. Porgies up to 14 inches have been over near buoy 9. She also said she's heard that there are sea robins galore all over the place. There has been very little news about bluefish in the area but one customer reported taking a small blue on a fly rod off of one of the local beaches. Shop customer Antonio brought in an SP Minnow that was bitten in half by a large bluefish on the South Shore this week.

Sue over at Miller Place Bait and Tackle told us that the striper fishing has been seeing an increase in the number and size of fish taken. The fish have been off of the buoy line from Port Jeff to Wading River this past week with trolled lures catching the bigger fish. Matt Rosica weighed in a nice bass for the shop's annual Spring Striper Shootout that runs for the whole month of June. Matt's fish was 25.7-pounds and is current leader of the pack in the tournament. Sue added that the porgies have been thick over at Old Field Point this week with fish over 16 inches being landed. They've been all over in fact according to Sue. 7 year old Chloe fished with her dad JT on his kayak earlier this week. She landed a 2.7-pound scup. Fine catch Chloe! The fluke fishing has been picking up quite a bit of steam this week too. Sue said that the flatties have been hanging near buoy 11 and buoy 9 as well as out front of Cedar Beach. Mike and Craig both caught their limits of fluke fishing off of the Concession Stand at Cedar Beach earlier in the week. Sue also mentioned that the bluefish appeared to have hit the local waters off of Rocky Point and Mt. Sinai. Lastly Sue mentioned that there have been schools of bunker off of the local beaches this week. She added that they haven't been staying in one area but have been moving all around the area.

Jim at Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported that there has been a really solid porgy bite going on. Anglers have been seeing decent catches of 30 fish per man with fish well over 16 inches being brought into the shop. The fluke fishing has been picking up as well. There have been plenty of fish hanging around the shallow waters along the North Shore this week. There are loads of shorts but plenty of keepers upwards of 20 inches are also being landed. Jim said that the striper fishing was doing very well in the beginning of the week. The anglers targeting the buoy line from Port Jeff to Shoreham were doing very well with fish up to 30 inches. Just a reminder that the shop's striper tournament kicks off this Friday June 1 so get in while you can. You can call the shop at 631-849-5430 to get more details on the contest. Jim added that there haven't been any reports of blues in the area just yet. He said that they've been east and west of us so they should be starting to show locally this coming week.
