Miller Place Bait & Tackle

November 20, 2017:
Jim over at Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported that the blackfishing has been very good this past week. Shop regular Eddie fished near Cranes Neck last Sunday and found enough keepers to fill his limit and then some. Shop customer Charlie fished Monday out at the Middle Grounds and he found plenty of fish willing to chew. He too was able to limit out easily. Shop regular Chris and three buddies limited out on Saturday within just a couple of hours of fishing. He said that they could have had 30 keepers each. Jim also said that there have been lots of schoolie bass inside Mount Sinai Harbor. 5 inch Storm shads have been the most consistent producer. The fish have been up to around 22 inches. A few of the shop's customers have been chasing squid inside Port Jefferson Harbor and doing very well with some nice size specimens.

Jim and Sue from Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported that the fishing has been red hot this week regardless of a few bad spots of weather. There are still big porgies around Cranes Neck Point. Fish over 17 inches have been coming over the rails all week. Small sea bass have mixing in with the porgies and have becoming a nuisance. Fish no bigger than your thumb have been trying to steal bait from rigs all the time. There have been some bigger sea bass taken too. Lou landed a 17-inch seabass from near buoy 9 on Saturday. Charlie picked up 4 nice sea bass all over 17-inches. He also fished Saturday somewhere on the North Shore. Shop regular James weighed in a beautiful sea bass on Monday. His fish was 4.7-pounds. Blackfish reports have been good this week. The fish have been in relatively shallow water from 15 to 20 feet deep. Most of the fish are below the 16 inch minimum size limit but there are still quite a few keepers being landed. The shop has even been hearing reports of keeper tog coming from the East Marion beaches this week. False albacore are still pretty thick in the area too. Epoxy jigs and Deadly Dicks have been accounting for the most fish.

Sue and Jim over at Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported that they have been hearing of really solid fall fishing. There have been plenty of big porgies still around. Cranes Neck Point, Old Field Point and the Middle Grounds have all been stacked up with scup. Sea bass have also been at the same spots. The blackfishing has been okay so far but there has been way more short fish in the mix than keepers. Cranes Neck, Old Field and the Middle Grounds have all been seeing plenty of tog. Word has been that all of the sea bass around have been hounding the baits sent down for blackfish. The Middle Grounds have been seeing lots of bluefish too. Shop regular John has been seeing plenty of blues on jigs to 10 pounds. Stripers to 36 inches have been on the area beaches after dark as well. The adult bunker seems to have moved out of Mt. Sinai Harbor leaving only schools of peanut bunker and schoolie bass.
