At Hook House Bait & Tackle they said bluefish are the prime catch in the surf right now for those using bait, while those fishing artificials are picking up blues and some short bass at Island Beach State Park. With the cooler temperatures, the fishing fall run should heat up.

    At Hook House Bait & Tackle they said it was a little quiet on the beaches Friday but action was better over the weekend. Blackfish are hitting green crabs at the canal for those trying for them. The daytime bite off the surf was slow according to a number of customers. Just before dark and after dark some blues showed up for those using mullet and bunker chunks. Blowfish bite continues off the local docks, bulkheads and piers in the back and the Toms River closer to the mouth on the Ocean Gate and Island Heights side. They heard of a couple weakfish again last night before dark in the river.

    At Hook House Bait & Tackle, they said blues are chasing mullet off the surf and mullet remains the bait of choice. Short bass are hitting artificials in a few spots off the local beaches. The snapper bite has been good on both sides of the Toms River. They heard from three different groups that the blowfish bite has been on fire. So has the bass bite at the canal with eels. A couple of folks said weakfish are stacked up in the bay.

    At Hook House Bait & Tackle and Go Fish Bait & Tackle, the report was of small blues and some short bass hitting artificials in the surf at Island Beach State Park for those moving around. Mullet and bunker chunks are working for those using bait. Blowfish are hitting small pieces of salted clams in between the BB and BI buoys so break out the chum logs and give them a shot. Blowfish are also around off the local docks, bulkheads and piers in the back bay. Bass and blues are hitting live eels at the Point Pleasant canal after dark. Snappers are still roaming the river and if you put your time in you can get a decent catch of crabs.

    At Hook House Bait & Tackle and Go Fish Bait & Tackle, they have been getting multiple reports of spike weakfish chewing in the Toms River. The bite has been at dusk in the Ocean Gate area, with the yacht club being a very good spot. A few keepers are mixed in but a reminder that you can keep just one at 13 inches. There are bluefish and striped bass being caught on the beach; they said mullet or bunker chunks are the way to go. Metals and swimming plugs are working but make sure you move around. Snappers and crabs are on both sides of the Toms River for those trying for them. The canal is producing bass at night for those fishing live eels.
