Hook House

April 23, 2018:
At Hook House Bait & Tackle, they are hearing about short bass being caught in the surf and they are hitting bits of clam and small bunker chunks. Not much in the way of keepers yet but there it action and activity. "One of our customers got a couple short bass on the south end of Island Beach State Park on artificials," they said. They are hearing about the weakfish in the backbay areas as well. The back bay and the Toms River are giving up short stripers on artificials and bloodworms; Adam Aguiar reported he had some shorts in the Island Heights area. The coves on the Ocean Gate side of the river were giving up small stripers in the early morning darkness on artificials. Their sister shop, Go Fish Bait & Tackle, is open now as well.

At Hook House Bait & Tackle, the reports were of short bass off Island Beach State Park to 25 inches hitting clams. On the Ocean Gate side of the Toms River, bass were hitting artificials. Bass and white perch also are hitting bloodworms on both sides of the river. Bunker chunks in the river also are taking some fish. They have fresh clams and fresh bunker. Winter flounder were biting at Oyster Creek, they said. The trout bite at the normal locations has been good so there are plenty of reasons to go fishing.

At Hook House Bait & Tackle, the reports on winter flounder and white perch remain consistent, along with the short stripers. The Toms River has had a lot of life of all three and there are decent fish being taken daily by the regulars. Brian Lindner has been picking up winter flounder on every trip, and Chris Smith is locked in on a fine white perch bite. The stripers are biting on both sides of the Toms River, they said. Bloodworms are very productive, but a reminder to chum generously for the winter flounder. X-Raps and swim shads are taking stripers, and Ocean Gate has been a good place to go. Go Fish Bait & Tackle, their sister shop, is open now too and stocked with what you need.

At Murphy's Hook House, Dennis said the short bass are biting on both sides of the Toms River and by Oyster Creek. It's a night bite, and most of the fish are shorts but he had a report of a keeper over the weekend. "Bloodworms are your best bet," he said.

At Murphy's Hook House, Dennis said Jeremy Lewis picked up his first striper while fishing on Friday night saying that short stripers were the norm on the Toms River. Bloodworms remain the hot bait. "Heard of an early morning bite yesterday in the Island Heights area but didn't hear much after that," Dennis said on Sunday. As for fish on the move, he had another report of bunker in the Barnegat Bay outside of Oyster Creek.
