Watch Hill Outfitters

October 21, 2019:
Harrison at Watch Hill Outfitters said that the storm swells have been great for his surfing, but not so much for those trying to get offshore. He did have one commercial guy tell him about some small yellows and a decent bigeye in an undisclosed canyon, but that was the only report to come through the door.

Harrison at Watch Hill Outfitters said that one of their clients tried to sneak in a tuna trip to the Shipping Lanes just before the blow, but experienced some surprise engine trouble, ending the trip before ever reaching the grounds. The big storm kept everyone else tied tightly to the dock.

Harrison and Doug were in the shop on Sunday morning at Watch Hill Outfitters and like most other local guys, they didn't have much recent offshore intel to speak of. Mid-week saw some big bull mahi from the canyons, but that was the last time anyone go out there. The fish were pretty much on any structure and willing to chew. Closer to home, they heard of some improving cod fishing at Coxes as would be expected this time of the season.

Harrison at Watch Hill Outfitters said that overall it was a pretty quiet week on the offshore scene. The local bluefin disappeared more or less, leaving a few folks wandering down toward the canyons to look for some action. There were a couple of yellowfin landed but most of the action was in the form of mahi and the occasional swordfish. Interestingly, there was an abundance of juvenile thresher sharks feeding on small bait very close to Montauk Point; a good sign for the future of the fishery.

Harrison at Watch Hill Outfitters said that flats of butterfish were flying out the door and they were having trouble keeping any in the stock for more than a few hours. This is all due to a good bite of bluefin that raged on at the CIA grounds throughout the week. While CIA was reportedly drying up, Harrison said that these tuna were now being reported south of Block Island.
