Southbound Charters

October 14, 2019:
Southbound Fishing Charters reports that local bluefish, Montauk stripers, and tasty tautog, have made up for the lack of offshore opportunities in the past couple of weeks. There may still be another shot or two at tuna if the weather ever settles down.

Previous Reports

Southbound Fishing Charters told me that most of their trips have been centered on the excellent porgysea bass bite or bass and bluefish. When they have gotten offshore, the fishing has been good with yellowfin, albacore, and tons of mahi. Sharking is still an option as well, with threshers hanging around south of Montauk.

Southbound Fishing Charters reports that they were able to break away from the bass and blues to sneak in a couple of offshore trips for their loyal customers. The first trip was a run to the canyons resulting in a couple of very solid yellowfin and a pile of mahi. On their next trip they managed to cash-in on the on-going thresher bite, boating a fish of 400 pounds. The action should last as long as the weather holds up!

Southbound Fishing Charters reports that they have been spending most days inshore working the scup and sea bass. When they have gotten offshore, sharking has been very consistent, while tuna fishing has been a bit more sporadic as of late. Mahi are popping up just about all over, and are providing great light tackle action.

From Skip at Saunders Boat Livery, Inc. in Southwick we heard that bass fishing at all three ponds at Congamond Lakes remains "pretty good." Largemouths comprise the hulk of catches, but a few smallmouths in the 2- to 2.5-pound range are also being caught. Both shallow and deep structures are producing, and all kinds of lures including grubs, plastic worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and buzzbaits are working well. Docks have been good bass-holding structures, but Skip thinks you'll find more and bigger bass if you locate weed edges. Weed-control measures have killed-off much of the vegetation, but there are isolated places where weeds are still viable. These spots attract and hold lots of bass. Lily pad fields are always worth probing too. By the way, if you snag your lure on a dock or boat, don't break it off and leave it there where it could hurt someone. Instead, do your best to remove the lure or hook even if it means risking being scolded by a proprietor who doesn't want you anywhere near his or her dock or boat. Trout anglers at Congamond Lakes are catching a few browns and rainbows on lures trolled in deep water.
