Dick's Bait & Tackle

July 16, 2018:
It was another very busy week at Dick's Bait and Tackle where the surf fishing slowed down a bit but guides like shop employee Matt are working hard to produce a few keepers and some great schoolie action. What is so surprising is that this place which has been a summer home for blues of all sizes has not lived up to that reputation. The blues are few and far between, but the black sea bass bite continues to please and some better fishing for fluke was had this week along the edges of Lucas and Middle Ground. One reliable source reported some great tuna action on Coxes Ledge where bluefin arrived on the tail of huge schools of small squid providing some unexpected but welcomed action.

Captain Lee took his new custom sport fisherman to Veatch Canyon where they scored on yellowfin and released a white marlin, and Steve from Dick's Bait and Tackle said they also had a blue marlin in the wake for a while. Locally the striper fishing is just OK on boats, and the surf guys are really working hard for a few fish, mostly on the north side. There are not many bluefish around and Steve said that this is the weirdest bluefish season thus far. There are good black sea bass and some improving fluke fishing in and around Lucas Shoal and over on the Elizabeth side off Quicks Hole.

The word from Taylor at Dick's Bait and Tackle was about the numbers of stripers all around the island with a very good number of keepers coming from the north side hot spots all week long. Many of those fish are in the 28- to 34-inch class with the occasional 20-pounder with most of the fish on artificials. The fluke fishing in the sound has improved with more keepers in that mix, but there are very few blues and the squid that were in the harbors disappeared. They have been replaced with hickory shad which are certain to be live-lined for stripers. One customers fished Hedge Fence with soft baits and was all by himself as he caught and released several very nice stripers in the 20-pound class.

The fishing has been very good according to Doug at Dick's Bait and Tackle who told us there were stripers all around the island with surf fishermen doing well with specimens from 16 to 32 inches, and these fish are working bait in all the harbors and inlets. Using a variety of lures their patrons are doing well with surface and topwater plugs and an assortment of jig and metals. The scup bite has been lights-out with some really big and aggressive scup being taken at the big lighthouse and on many of the rockpiles. There have been some legal fluke but a lot more shorts in the catches around state beach and Oak Bluffs. There are a few blues around but they are spotty and not the numbers they usually expect at this time of the season.

A shop full of patrons at Dick's Bait and Tackle were anxious to get into a good striper bite in Vineyard Sound where lots of sub-legal bass are being taken on top and by casting jigs, soft baits or diamond jigging. A few legal fluke are coming in from Lucas and Middle Ground. A surfcaster took a 14-pound blue from the Chappy surf this week, and a few smaller blues have been hit at Squibby and Dogfish bar.
