Dick's Bait & Tackle

September 16, 2019:
The Vineyard was bursting at the seams with Derby contestants who arrived at the island via all manner of transportation. Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle was giving directions for the best locations for the albies and bonito that were working all around the island but particularly in some of the harbors. There are plenty of stripers although most of them were not legal or just over legal size. The event got underway at midnight Saturday and as of noon on Sunday there were a few bass that must measure at least 34 inches – that were checked in and they weighed 12, 15, 16 and 17 pounds. That 12-pounder must have had the body of a pickerel. If you are looking for a tautog for dinner ask Steve for his recommendation as to where to fish on the north shore.

Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle was upbeat about his last trip out on Captain Greg Lees sport fisherman. They had a bunch of big yellowfins, released a 400-pound blue marlin and Steve was fortunate to have hooked and landed a big Allison tuna. Locally the striper fishing has been slow for legal-sized fish, but there are plenty of school-sized bass in the mid 20-inch class along with good numbers of bonito and albies all around the island, and those species have been providing the best of the action. Stop in to see Steve or Doug to sign up for the derby which gets underway on Sept 15th, and while you're there ask them to hook you up with the hot lures and what is going on at the most current hot spots.

Doug took a break from his all-out pursuit of bones to take his turn at the counter on the main floor of Dick's Bait and Tackle where Derby fever has taken hold on the first day of September. There are loads of smaller bones working the docks of Edgartown and inside of Oak Bluffs Harbor, but some of the boats are working so close to the shore it's been a problem. The bones are a bit bigger but the albies are very good size with a 13-pounder weighed in the Vineyard this week. The Derby begins on September 15 and runs to October 19. Customers are talking about the thousands of mini stripers in the 12- to 20-inch class which are showing all around the island. The only people catching larger bass are tossing eels and swimmer after dark. Doug has never seen this many puffer fish and triggers around and the puffers are also being caught in the lobster and sea bass pots. After a banner year for squid in 2018 there are very few squid seen or being caught in all the regular locations.

Taylor at Dick's Bait and Tackle was upbeat about the size and number of bonito and albies in local waters and reports of bones to 6 pounds and albies to 8. The striper bite has been very slow with a few hungries using eels at night to pull 20-pound class stripers from the north side and off Squibby and the Wasque surf. Steve got out with Captain Lee this week and they scored a bunch of yellowfin and quite a few mahi. It seems that the offshore bite has been improving all season long. Our friend Doug was out chasing bones and albies in preparation for the derby which is just around the corner.

There are bones all around the island according to Taylor at Dick's Bait and Tackle who said the size went from tiny foot-long specimens to fish in the 5-pound or better class. There was also a better bite on blues at Chappy on topwater lures and one of two alligators mixed-in with the smaller choppers. There were reports of much larger bones at the Hooter where a few prized albies were caught. The striper fishing has been hot and cold with some guys catching small keepers along the north side casting live eels and trolling the tube and worm. Steve is looking forward to his next trip with Captain Lee before the Derby gets underway then its working 24 hours a day when the famous tourney draws anglers from all over the country.
