Dick's Bait & Tackle

October 15, 2018:
By the time you read this the Derby will be history. Doug at Dick's Bait and Tackle was calling off the numbers for the largest striper and blues with a 39-pound boat fish leading the 37-pound surf fish bluefish were scarce but big with an 18.49 alligator from a boat and a 13 from the beach. The largest albie was a whopping 11.75-pounder while a 6.76- pound bone was leading the beach division. Trying to beat the smaller bone, Doug fished a live butterfish that swam for an hour on Saturday morning without anything threatening it. My friend has been snake bit during this derby.

During the derby Dick's Bait and Tackle is always a busy place. Doug was waiting on five Derby entrants who had stopped in to pick up a few extra albie and bonito lures. The bass fishing has been tough with plenty of schoolies and very few legal bass around. Our friend Eileen registered a 9-pound blue and won a mystery prize on the Vineyard where the contest has another week to go. Doug said the albies were showing up in numerous locations, but those places change with wind and weather.

The Derby is in full swing, and our friend Charlie Cinto was out there last week to attend the funeral of longtime Derby president Ed Jerome who died while engaging in a pastime that brought him great pleasure. The fishing has been good for small stuff according to Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle who said there are small fish all around the island and that the bonito fishing shut down for a while with the stiff northeast winds. There have been good catches of albies wherever they tend to show, and recently that was up inside of Menemsha harbor and over at Tashmoo. There has also been some decent action on the small blues in the 3-pound class that have been pounding bait all around the island. The striper leader board has not changed over the past week, but a 12-pound albie took the lead in that division.

The word from Doug at Dick's Bait and Tackle was about the great surf fishing all around the island. There is plenty of action on small stripers and enough keepers to keep it very interesting. The new leader in the Derby surf striper is a 35-pounder that now leads the 29-pounder from a boat. There are loads of bass and blues working the upper section of the water column feeding on the abundant schools of peanut bunker and silversides. Captain Lee made a trip to the Crab Ledge area where they caught a load of cod and mackerel, but no one there saw or hooked any tuna.

The Derby is in full swing at Dick's Bait and Tackle where Steve gave us an update on the current standings after the first week. Stripers of 29 pounds lead the boat and surf divisions while the boat blue is 13 pounds with an 8-pounder from the shore. Albies to 10 pounds have been recorded and bones in the 5-pound class have been taken all around the island. There are a lot of anglers participating in this annual contest where loads of valuable prizes are being offered. The shop has the entry forms and all the gear you need to compete at a high level.
