It was another busy week at Dick's Bait and Tackle where Derby participants were catching quite a few bonito off Squibby and around Wasque. Some of those bones were in the 8-pound class and there were reports and photos of albies breaking the 10-pound class. There was a junior class bass entered at 37 pounds that gives local angler Mason Warburton bragging honors for the biggest striper thus far. There are small blues working the island, but not many alligators have been hooked or recorded. Steve is hoping for some larger bass to move in while the guys working from boats are catching small keepers but nothing bigger that 30 pounds thus far.

It was another crazy, hectic weekend on the Vineyard during Derby time according to our friend Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle. There was a 35-pound striper entered on Saturday morning and bluefish in the 14-pound class lead the surf and boat division. Steve said the surf fishing was producing schoolies and a few just legal bass as residents and contestants wait for a push of bigger stripers to move into the island. There is a load of bait here on the Vineyard and Dick says when the fish discover this the action should improve.

The Vineyard was bursting at the seams with Derby contestants who arrived at the island via all manner of transportation. Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle was giving directions for the best locations for the albies and bonito that were working all around the island but particularly in some of the harbors. There are plenty of stripers although most of them were not legal or just over legal size. The event got underway at midnight Saturday and as of noon on Sunday there were a few bass that must measure at least 34 inches – that were checked in and they weighed 12, 15, 16 and 17 pounds. That 12-pounder must have had the body of a pickerel. If you are looking for a tautog for dinner ask Steve for his recommendation as to where to fish on the north shore.

Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle was upbeat about his last trip out on Captain Greg Lees sport fisherman. They had a bunch of big yellowfins, released a 400-pound blue marlin and Steve was fortunate to have hooked and landed a big Allison tuna. Locally the striper fishing has been slow for legal-sized fish, but there are plenty of school-sized bass in the mid 20-inch class along with good numbers of bonito and albies all around the island, and those species have been providing the best of the action. Stop in to see Steve or Doug to sign up for the derby which gets underway on Sept 15th, and while you're there ask them to hook you up with the hot lures and what is going on at the most current hot spots.
