Dick's Bait & Tackle

November 13, 2017:
The word from Steve at Dick's Bait and Tackle was that anyone needing tackle should call and leave him a message and he would meet them at the shop in the afternoon. There are reports of schoolies all around the island and some decent tautog fishing on the north side.

The albie fishing is World Class according to Doug at Dick's Bait and Tackle who was describing the fantastic action in and around Edgartown Harbor. I wonder what the old timers would say about it being late October with the albie fishing so much better than those huge bass migrations of years past. Besides a Yo-Zuri plug Doug and his companions are live-lining squid and the albies are sucking them down like candy. The ponds, harbors and inlets are loaded with small bass, and this could be the year they have an abundance of holdover fish all winter long. There have been some major striper blitzes along the south side where those bass are pounding the peanut bunker.

The 2017 Derby is history and the committee has to be thrilled that there was once again a 50-pound bass at the top of the leader board. Doug from Dick's Bait and Tackle worked as hard as any surf fishermen could, but the 20-pound bass he scratched and clawed for were the best those long nights produced. There was also good news about the size and number of bonito that showed up in time to make things interesting. They had bones to 10 pounds and the bluefish winners were 18- and 16-pounds-plus in the boat and surf division. There are a few guys catching some big tog along north side rockpiles where some big scup have moved back in. Everyone is looking forward to a few more weeks of very good fishing as bass from the ocean beaches of Nantucket Sound begin to move west.
