Booked Off Charters

July 16, 2018:
Capt. Tony Guarino of Booked Off Charters said that the week started off a little slow as they had several fluke trips lined up but were only able to put between 8 to 12 keepers on the box each trip. Fortunately big black sea bass and scup rounded out the catch. Later in the week they switched over to targeting striped bass and the fishing has been excellent with fish up to nearly 50 pounds caught out at the island. After customers have their fill of striped bass they have been doing some ground fishing and finding plenty of large black sea bass and a few fluke. On Thursday they ran offshore and hooked up with a giant bluefin which they fought for a good 45 minutes before the fish broke off. They also did a little shark fishing early in the week and found a bunch of blue sharks along with a few makos.

Capt. Tony of Booked Off Charters ran several trips through the end of the week and weekend, reporting overall decent results on a variety of species. Friday started off with bass and he got an easy limit before changing to bottom fishing for fluke to 7-plus pounds and a pike of big scup and sea bass. Saturday's fluke trip was slow so he changed over to targeting scup and sea bass and quickly loaded up on both. Sunday's run was the first cod trip of the summer and it produced 17 fish to 20-plus pounds with some pollock mixed-in too. He finished off with some drifts for fluke on the way home and topped off the cooler with fluke to 8-plus pounds.

Big fish over the two days topped out at 10.5 and 9.5 pounds. Striped bass fishing has also been very good around the island with fish into the 30-pound class being caught either trolling or drifting eels.

Capt. Tony Guarino of Booked Off Charters said that they had trips every day this past week and fishing was overall very good. Most trips started out trolling for striped bass, and after limiting-out on fish in the 30- to 36-inch range they would switch over to bottom fishing and add another 15 to 20 keeper fluke to the cooler. A lot of nice-sized fluke in the 4- to 5-pound range were caught along with a few in the 7- to 8-pound range. They did have a few keeper black sea bass on Sunday as well which wasn't bad for not targeting them.

Capt. Tony Guarino of Booked Off Charters said that the fluke fishing took a hit this past week due to a ton of dogfish moving into the areas around Block Island. Even with all of the dogfish they have still been able to manage 15 or so keepers per trip and have seen some nice fish up to nearly 10 pounds. Striped bass fishing is picking up around the island. The fish are feeding heavily on sand eels so trolling frames has been the most effective way to target them.
