Bobby J's Bait & Tackle

February 19, 2018:
The guys over at Bobby J's said the Housy has been fishing a little better than usual through February, and, if history is any kind of an indicator, it should get even better as March progresses. The night bite tends to produce better fish and larger baits become more and more effective. Plugs like darters, SP Minnows and Red Fins will score well. Also soft plastic swimbaits on leadheads can dredge up some good fish as well. Don't sleep on rainy nights.

Over at Bobby J's the guys said that if past years are any kind of an indicator, we should see at least one week of mild (for February) weather this month and that week is always a hot one on the Housy. That short January thaw with that big rain fired up a good bite too, so keep your eye on the weather and plan accordingly. If the thaw doesn't come then the Housy bite will require time and dedication, but the fish are there and can be caught. Ice fishing has been the other big game and that should continue through most of February—just be very careful as the ice starts to go to slush, falling through is no joke. The last good bet is to hit one of the TMA's, the Farmington is a local favorite, but all of them can produce in the winter. The shop is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the winter.

Over at Bobby J's the word was that herring fishing had been solid for most of December and was expected to hold on well into January. Striped bass action in several tidal rivers had been going strong also. This fishery was comprised mostly of school bass, but the hardcore guys that fish at night pull some good fish every winter. The Housatonic is the most popular spot and for good reason. There has been an increase in head boat activity for many local anglers looking to bend a rod. The cod bite has been awesome, with plenty of sea bass and even some pollock in the mix. Those looking for more solitude will find excellent fishing in many of the TMA's; the Farmington provides excellent trout fishing all winter long. And don't snooze on the Naugatuck either; DEEP just released a big crop of salmon there and the fishing should be good for this for at least the next month as well.

Bobby J's reports that the Housy remains the best bet in town with good numbers of holdover striped bass being caught there both day and night. The fish are up river a bit, settling into their winter haunts. Sea herring are being seen in the Sound and around the mouth of the river, but not in any good numbers yet.

Bobby J's repots continued action on the Housy for striped bass. Night time with large jigs have been producing bigger fish with some upwards of 30 pounds being reported. Herring are starting to show around the mouth of the river so herring-imitators are recommended for larger fish
