Bobby J's Bait & Tackle

November 20, 2017:
John over at Bobby J's said the weather has been an issue for many. But the guys that are braving the waves are doing well on blackfish. The shop saw several good ones this week between 6 and 9 pounds with two over 11 pounds in the mix as well. There seems to be millions of schoolie bass around too, inside the Housy, at the mouth, along the beaches and just about anywhere else you can think of. Most of these fish are 15- to 25-inches but there are enough keepers up to like 32 inches to keep things interesting. Bigger stripers are coming from the deeper humps on jigs and chunks, there have been a few decent bluefish out there as well. Albies are all done and John said he has not heard any sea bass or porgy reports in more than a week.

Previous Reports

  • November 6, 2017 Open or Close

John over at Bobby J's said the Fall Run seems to be in full effect now and it's almost the second week of November! There are bass and blues everywhere, the key is to find bait—bass to 38 pounds and blues to 15 pounds were reported this week. Albie fishing is still red hot throughout the area. Blackfish action remains strong the various walls and jetties have all been producing fish; nothing really big yet—but solid fish to 8 pounds have been fairly common. Porgies are still around too but not many guys are fishing for them.

John over at Bobby J's said the local blackfish reports have been a little slower than expected, but they're getting better every day. Branford and New Haven seem to be the best areas; most of the fish are on the smaller side though, topping out around 6 pounds. The porgy bite is still very good. Sea bass reports have been scarce, but a few guys are still catching. Albies slowed down a little this week but there have been some good charges of fish in tight which has given the shore guys some good shots at them. Bluefishing is best out deep, trolling or chunking, in close to shore it's been all scattered rat bluefish this week. There are tons of school bass around. Night guys throwing eels are getting some bigger ones inside the Housy and surrounding areas. One local surf guy nailed a 41-pounder on an eel over the weekend.

  • October 16, 2017 Open or Close

John over at Bobby J's said blackfishing started off solid last week with good numbers of keepers up to about 6 pounds. Guys are having to work for them though citing about an 8-to-1 keeper ratio. The best spots this week were the Stratford Walls, the New Haven Walls and the hard bottom behind Charles Island. Porgies are still red hot, shore and boat, some big hubcaps in the mix. Bluefish are hit and miss right now, but there are some big ones out there, Bill Blotney had an 18.98-pounder this week, there were a few 16s and 17s taken as well. Albies are back in the area again and can be caught anywhere from Morningside out to Middle Ground; there were a few taken from the beach at Morningside and Welch's Point. There is tons of small bait around. Bass fishing picked up in the 'Giant Circle' off of Milford—the Giant Circle touches the edges of the mouth of the Housy, Can 18, Can 20, Middle Ground and the Barber Poles. Guys have been getting some nice fish on topwater plugs, trolling and chunks. The best fish of the week came from the mouth of the Housy and was caught from shore, that 52-pounder took a pencil popper thrown by 'The Lucky Hahn'; other significant fish this week weighed 41 and 38 pounds. Drifting eels in the lower river has been productive for bass up to 25 pounds.

  • October 9, 2017 Open or Close

John over at Bobby J's said the albies are thick again and the bite is going off. Soft plastics have been the better option locally—Albie Snax, Zoom Flukes. Some nice bass have moved back into Middle Ground; the shop saw a 42- and a 39-pounder this week and heard of many other bass north of 20 pounds. Some good ones were also in around the mouth of the Housy. October is typically one of their best bass months. Blues have been hit and miss, but some big ones have been coming up on chunks in 40 to 50 feet. Porgy action remains solid at Charles Island and many other rocky locales. With the blackfish opener coming this week, John recommends starting at the Stratford of New Haven Walls with Woodmont being another good local bet.
