Bobby J's Bait & Tackle

June 11, 2018:
Johnny over at Bobby J's said some big bass rolled into local waters and the shop weighed some beasts this week. It's a perfect storm of herring and bunker that has attracted the big girls—fish well into the 30's are crushing herring and plugs at the dam, then some big ones north of 40 have been following the bunker schools outside. Blues showed up too, mostly in the 6- to 8-pound class and they seem to be thickest around Stratford. Fluke reports are all coming from the New York side. Porgies have begun to fill in locally off New Haven, Woodmont and Stratford—the shop weighed in a 2.43-pounder for Ryan McCarthy this week. And the weakfish bite is still going strong at West Haven Sandbar.

Johnny over at Bobby J's said the weakfish bite held on through most of the week with fish to 10 pounds reported, but it had slowed way down by the weekend. They are very moon-centric so, maybe we'll see another good stretch as the new moon approaches. Striped bass fishing has been really hot and bunker chunks have been the killer. Anywhere from Milford to New Haven in 15 to 35 feet, the bite has been very good; 30- and 40-pound class fish have been biting well. The best fish of the week was a 47.2-pounder caught from shore by Jen Zuppe on a bunker head. There are some blues mixing in now too, mostly in the 5- to 7-pound class. Porgies are still biting well, any rocky spots between West Haven and Stratford will give up some fish, the shore anglers seem to be scoring better than the boat guys right now. Sea bass are around, but you have to find a deep wreck to score a limit. The fluke bite has been kind of slow, but the quality has been good—the shop is seeing decent numbers of 4- to 7-pound fish, not too many shorts to contend with either.

Johnny over at Bobby J's said last week was good, but this week was even better. He said the shop was swamped all day long (thanks Jay), but it was great to see so many guys heading out to fish. Fluking was very good this week; the guys from the shop made two short trips and scored seven nice keepers to 5.5 pounds. Shop patron Leroy Miaers weighed-in a 4.18-pounder on Saturday as well. New Haven and Can 12 have been good fluke spots. Porgy reports have been very good, shore guys seem to be scoring even better than the boat guys right now. Sea bass action has been mostly shorts. Striper action has been very good out in deeper water for those soaking chunks or trolling spoons; fish from 20- to 30-plus pounds have been common. Up in the river, the herring are thick making the bite tough. Bluefish are showing sporadically, mostly around pods of bunker. Weakfish reports are still strong, and that should continue, at least, through the coming moon.

From the crew at Bobby J's in Milford we heard that local bassing officially hit high gear this week with fish to 40-plus pounds landed locally. And it's not just up the river where the bigger fish were caught as the local beaches have seen bunker and bass on them. Weakfishing still remains "good" with a decent pick of fish being caught, but you do have to work for them.
