This past week saw a nice mix of fish for anglers, according to Tom Palmisano over at the Fisherman's Den North. Mixed size stripers and blues continued to give anglers action around the schools of baitfish and some albies made their way into the bay close to the shop. Porgy fishing remains very good and plenty of fishermen are catching their one fish tog limit and playing catch and release with a lot more fish. Bottom fishing boats fishing outside are into a mix of porgies, tog and plenty of sea bass which bids well for the restart of the sea bass fishing this week. Some bass and blues are being caught in the surf and the shop had its first winter flounder weighed in both stores.

Striped bass have been the main target of fishermen stopping in at the Fisherman's Den North. Tom Palmisano told me anglers have been catching a mix of shorts and keepers, and while he has not heard of any real big fish the numbers have been good. New York Harbor has been seeing more keepers than anywhere else, but there has been a mix of small blues, mixed size stripers and decent size weakfish popping up all along the lower side of the bay and off Sandy Hook. Albies are also giving anglers some hot fishing in the ocean and tog fishing is good off the jetties and rock piles.

The report we got from Tom Palmisano over at Fisherman's Den North echoed most other reports we got this past week. Tom said there are tons of baitfish around and a good mix of fish feeding on them. However the weather just wouldn't ease up. All along the lower side of Raritan Bay were mixed size stripers, small blues and weakfish working over schools of peanut bunker and rainfish. Some bigger bass are being caught on eels after dark and some bigger weakfish to 6 pounds; the bigger blues are being caught in the ocean. Fluke fishing produced mostly shorts the last week of the season, and most boats that are still fishing are switching to porgy fishing, which continues to be very good. Likewise the shop got reports of good blackfishing, along with a few triggerfish that are still around, he said.

Over at the Fisherman's Den North Tom Palmisano said things started to settle down on Friday and Saturday saw a marked improvement in the fishing. The store got reports of bass and blues giving anglers some action along the lower side of the bay, and some fluke being caught in the creeks and Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers. Porgy fishing remained very good, as did the crabbing out of the rental boats. A couple of the bigger boats managed to fish offshore and got into some yellowfin and nice numbers of mahi.
