Jigging World

June 11, 2018:
This past week saw a better number of anglers get in on the good bass, fluke and sea bass fishing said Danny at Jigging World. Dan told me reports coming into the store told of very good bass action around the Hook and just down from it. Most of the better fluke fishing has been along the edges of the flats on the outgoing water. Sea bass fishing got better as the week progressed, and big bluefish also showed up with the bass late in the week.

Big bass remained the number one seed for anglers stopping in at Jigging World. Dan told me most of the action in the bay has been in the deeper waters of the Sandy Hook and Ambrose channels on the troll. Likewise some big bass continued to be caught around the schools of bunker in the ocean mainly by anglers snagging and dropping bunker. Bottom fishermen are pulling decent numbers of sea bass and fluke fishing has been hit or miss.

News of the big bass at the Shrewsbury Rocks also reached the folks over at Jigging World. Mark told me the store got reports of bass in the 40s and some topping the 50-pound mark during the week. Livelining bunker and trolling was the ticket to the fish, they said. Here too we were told the first reports on the fluke fishing was plenty of shorts and fair amount of keepers being boated on Friday and Saturday. Some blues also made a showing in the bay and along the ocean front.

Good bass fishing in Raritan Bay until the weather hit was the news at Jigging World. Danny said a good body of bass moved into the bay, most of which were keepers to 30-plus pounds. He also mentioned some nice fish being trolled and caught on bait in the ocean down from Sandy Hook. Here too the first reports on the bottom fishing were cold waters kept the fishing picky.

Some of the smaller northern rivers are running high but are fishable and producing some nice trout, said Rich over at Jigging World. He fished the upper Wanaque on Saturday morning and caught trout, but said he had to put some extra weight on his line because the river was swift. When it comes to fishing the northern lakes and ponds it all depends on the individual body of water and how the rains affected them. Some ponds, especially smaller isolated ones were fishable while others were a waste of time, he sad.
