Jigging World

November 20, 2017:
Chris over at Jigging World said anglers stopping in the store this past week raved about the bass fishing in Raritan Bay and surrounding waters. Bass to 40-plus pounds served up good fishing both in Raritan Bay and outside just off the beaches. Beach fishermen also got into some bass on plugs and shads. Here too we were told tog fishing was spotty because of poor sea conditions caused by the weather.

Danny over at Jigging World told me he too had heard of an upswing in the bass fishing towards the end of the week. He said several anglers stopping in the store told of excellent fishing the first three days of the week, then some weather problems with fishing rebounding over the weekend with even better fishing. He too said bottom fishing has also been good with sea bass and tog supplying the fishing.

"The striped bass fishing really broke open once waters settled down after the Sunday blow," said Mark at Jigging World. Mark told me he got reports of bass in the mid 40's being caught mostly on the troll on mojos and spoons in Raritan Bay and off the Shrewsbury Rocks. Bottom fishing also took a jump with sea bass and tog dominating the catch along with some big porgies, he said.

It was a good week of striped bass fishing and bottom fishing in between the weather, cited Mark at Jigging World. Mark told me boat fishermen are starting to see some better numbers of bass on the troll in the bay. He said he marked bass on he way out to the Mud Hole for some bottom fishing and found them on the troll in the same area on the way back in. Speaking of bottom fishing, the sea bass action has been very good, but you have to pick through the smaller fish to put together a catch of keepers, he said.

Mark over at Jigging World told me bottom fishing has been an excellent mix of porgies and tog. "We should see a lot more sinker bouncers now that sea bass are in the mix as well," he said. News York Harbor is still the hot spot for stripers, however big numbers of boats are making fishing the area difficult. This week also saw a lot of albies and smaller bluefish in Raritan Bay and some bigger blues with albies and Spanish mackerel mixed in along the inshore waters.
