Big Game Sportfishing

June 18, 2018:
Capt. Brian Bacon of Big Game Sportfishing said that fishing early in the week was very good for fluke with some nice-sized fish being recorded. Shamus had a real giant at 13.76 pounds, and both Brian and his brother Peter had fish around the 10-pound mark. This weekend was the annual Fluke Til Ya Puke tournament and it was the largest yet with over 16 thousand anglers entered. Fishing on Saturday was reported to be tough with most boats reporting issues with dogfish out around Block Island. There were still some nice fish entered and an 11.4-pound fish took first place. With the island loaded with dogfish and the beaches producing mostly smaller fish it was the boats that ventured west towards Montauk that placed well in this year's tournament.

Capt. Brian Bacon of Big Game Sportfishing reported another great week of striped bass fishing up in the Bay with fish over the 40-pound mark being caught on live bunker. Striped bass fishing is also starting to pick up out at the island and they had no problem limiting-out on fish to around 38 inches on umbrella rigs this past week. Fluke fishing has been good overall but varies day by day depending on the conditions and the presence of dogfish which have started to become a nuisance around the island. They have been seeing a lot of fish in the 4- to 5-pound range and had a few larger ones up to 9 pounds this past week. There were definitely more keepers around this past week both inshore and out around the island.

Capt. Brian Bacon of Big Game Sportfishing reported that the striped bass fishing up in the Bay has been going strong with two fish over 40 pounds boated last week. There are also a ton of small stripers up in the bay providing exciting fishing for light tackle and fly guys. Fluke fishing off of the local beaches has been decent but expect to pick through a lot of short fish to put together a decent catch. Out around Block the fluke fishing has been very good and they had fish to 9 pounds last week with a lot of fish in the 5-pound range

Capt. Brian Bacon of Big Game Sportfishing said that the week started off very well with a string of good fluke fishing trips off of the beaches. Unfortunately, towards the end of the week the fluke fishing seemed to slow down and Sunday's trips were canceled due to the weather. Striped bass fishing is really starting to heat up in Narragansett Bay with larger bass feeding on schools of adult bunker. Light tackle topwater fishing has been producing very good numbers of small fish. Larger fish to almost 40 pounds have been coming on live bunker. On Thursday's trip they had a couple of 20-pound bass, a 35-pounder and a 38-pounder all on live bunker. On Friday, they had two more fish over 30 pounds.

Capt. Brian Bacon of Big Game Sportfishing said that they had postponed a couple of trips off this past week due to a lack of consistent fishing in local waters. Fluke have started moving in at Block and along the beaches. A commercial friend of Capt. Brian's did 50 pounds of fluke off of East Matunuck beach this past week with a number of the fish being recreational keepers. If the weather cooperates they should start running charters this week.
