Trade Winds Marina

November 13, 2017:
It was big time bass fishing early in the week according to Larry Thompson at Trade Winds Marina. Larry said boats sailing from the marina enjoyed good trolling on mojos and spoons, as well as some surface feeding fish on jigs and poppers. Brian Siyouf and his crew slammed the big bass with several bass in the upper 40s for the top catch at the marina. A lot of anglers who fish out of the marina are looking forward to the increase in the tog bag this week, Larry added.

A lot of boats sailing out of the Trade Winds Marina took advantage of the exploding striped bass fishing as well as the good bottom fishing this past week. Larry Thompson told me most of the better bass action started on Wednesday and continued right through the weekend despite some poor conditions. Bottom fishing did not start picking up until Thursday because of the left over heave from the Sunday storm. Better sized sea bass and tog are starting to dominate the sinker bouncing as porgy catches are on the decline according to Larry.

Trade Winds Marina held their fall striped bass contest this past weekend. Frank said, while fish were caught all week, the bass were scarce on Saturday. First place ($440) went to the Glen Davis crew for their 13.5-pound bass. Second place (220) was a 12.1-pound bass caught by the Ed Griffin party and third (a reel, VHF radio and lure package) was taken by Elmer Yeager with an 8.8-pound bass. The Griffin party donated their winnings to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

At the Trade Winds Marina we got word of some good albacore catches with some bluefish mixed in, in the Reach and off the tip of the Hook most of the week. Larry Thompson told us the best fishing has been first thing in the morning. Most of the better bass fishing is still in New York Harbor and the East River, but some fish have started to move into the back bay areas. "Bottom fishing continues to supply good catches of porgies and tog along with plenty of sea bass now that the season has reopened," he said.

A call to the Trade Winds Marina got us a report of some jaws being caught. Frank said Dave Rubay managed to get out to the Monster Ledge in between the weather and enjoyed some makos. Trade Winds will be hosting a striped bass contest to benefit Cystic Fibrosis the last weekend in October. Captains meeting will be on Friday, October 27 at 6 p.m. For information on the contest give the marina a call and ask for Frank.
