Bullet Hole Annex

February 19, 2018:
The word from Nick over at Bullet Hole Annex was very slow fishing in the brine. Several anglers stopped by the store and reported poor fishing for cod and ling on the few boats that have been fishing. "So far no reports have been heard from any of the early season striper hot spots," he said. March 1 is the back bay opening, and bloodworms should start getting the job done along the Bayshore by the middle of the month.

Previous Reports

We got a report of some blackfish being caught at the Shrewsbury Rocks when boats have been able to sail according to Nick at the Bullet Hole Annex. Nick said the tog fishing has been hit or miss because of the inconsistent weather. Here too we were told of some anglers fishing off the piers along the lower Hudson River, but no reports have come back to the shop of any fish being caught.

"The only fishing we have been hearing about has been short stripers in the surf and spotty blackfishing," cited Nick over at Bullet Hole Annex. Nick told me the closer we got to the holidays the numbers of fishermen really started dropping. The Annex will be open Monday through Friday weather permitting and closed Sundays during the winter.

Nick at Bullet Hole Annex continues to hear excellent reports on the striped bass fishing in Raritan Bay and down the beaches. Snag and Drop fishing has been the ticket to the bass outside while trolling mojos, spoons and shad has been the method of choice inside the bay. Blackfish catches have been spotty since the bag limit went up due to windy conditions and rough seas.

Striped bass fishing was red hot during the early part of the week, cited Nick over at Bullet Hole Annex. Boats trolling mojos, spoons and shads, and livelining bunker hooked up with bass in the 20- to 40-pound plus range in Raritan Bay and outside down from Sandy Hook. The early week winds and rough seas kept sinker bouncers off the ocean, however, late week trips scored good catches of sea bass, tog and porgies, Nick said.
