Bullet Hole Annex

August 10, 2020:
A call to Bullet Hole Annex got us several reports. Nick said the store weathered he storm with no problems, however many areas still did not have power over the weekend and debris was still being cleaned up from the storm. Greenwood Lake is giving up smallies and largemouth to topwater baits and plastics fished around weedlines and structures. Hopatcong is also serving up some bass along with hybrids and occasional walleyes after dark. The Passaic is giving up catfish, carp and some smallies under high water conditions. Last but not least Verona Park Lake is seeing a good panfish bite and some early day bass on topwater baits.

Another place that gave us word of decent smallmouth fishing in the South Branch, Passaic and other streams was Ramsey Outdoors. Sources there told us light tackle fishermen are scoring well on topwater baits and swimbaits, and fly fishermen are also scoring well on hair bugs and streamers. In addition we were told local small ponds and lakes are seeing a decent topwater morning bass bite and plenty to panfish.

Bass action was good in several paces despite the road blocks the weather through up this past week, said Nick over at Bullet Hole Annex. Pompton Lake saw a bass tournament produced some good catches with a 5-pound plus lunker. Greenwood and Monksville are seeing decent smallmouth action and a few walleyes after dark. Nick also mentioned very good smallmouth and largemouth fishing in the upper Hudson River in the Catskills. The tidewater portion of the Passaic continues to give up short stripers while the non-tidal river is producing smallies, largemouth, northerns, cap and catfish.

Greenwood Lake saw largemouth take over the top seed from the smallies this past week, said Joe over at Bullet Hole Annex. Joe told me smallmouth fishing is still decent but the largemouth have really turned on in the lake. Likewise largemouth fishing is also holding the edge of the smallmouth fishing in Lake Hopatcong. The bass fishing is mainly and early and late day bite on frogs, buzzbaits and other topwater baits in both lakes. He also said most serious trout fishermen have stopped fishing the low water streams which are seeing very high water temps which makes catch and release almost impossible

Prior to the Friday deluge fishing was good in the northern portion of the state said Nick over at Bullet Hole Annex. Both Hopatcong and Greenwood are seeing a decent early and late day bite of smallies and largemouth, and a few walleye are still being caught after dark. Small local ponds are seeing good catfishing, along with early day bass action on topwater baits. The Passaic was also fishing well for smallies, pike, catfish and carp before the rains.
