FishTales Bait & Tackle

November 13, 2017:
A good number of stripers made the scale over at Fishtales Bait and Tackle. Tim Riley told me Frank Hollosi hit the Rips one day for bass top 25 pounds, and then dropped south off the Nude Beach on his next trip and did equally well. Mike Gidiny opted for bottom fishing and worked the rock piles in the bay finding a slow bite of whitechins topped by a 5-pound tog. Doug Baillie fished Perth Ambry Beach and caught linesiders to 37 inches. Lastly Jim Chambers did some snagging and dropping off Deal and Asbury Park and got into a steady bite of bass to 40 pounds.

"Bass, bluefish, good bottom fishing, take your pick," said Tim Riley at Fishtales Bait and Tackle. Tim said the bass fishing broke open about mid-week and big bass were the rule with fish in the 30s and 40s being reported. Most of the better fishing was by boats trolling, however, topwater baits and metal hammered bass under the birds off and on as well. Slammers the size of alligators kept rods bent along the inshore waters, and bottom fishing served up a mix of sea bass, tog and some leftover porgies.

"We saw an uptick in the fishing this past week, and let's hope the storm won't set us back," said Tim Riley at Fishtales Bait and Tackle. Tim told me bass fishing, while sporadic, has seen a few nice fish on the scales. Israel Morales fished South Amboy Beach and hit stripers to 33 inches on bunker. Bottom fishing was also good with Frank Hartman, Bill Selawski and "Mister Gadget" enjoying a good bottom fishing trip to the Reef with sea bass to 20-inches, porgies and keeper tog making up the catch.

"Thank God the sea bass fishing is open," said Tim Riley at Fishtales Bait and Tackle. Sunday's reopening of the sea bass fishing put more fishermen on the water then all of last month. Tim said the down side was the calm shortage. Hopefully shops will be able to keep up with the bait demand by the sea bass fishermen. Magic, Brian, Keith and Chris fishing on the Magic Hour enjoyed excellent bottom fishing with tog, sea bass, porgies and some triggers supplying the fishing. Pedro Rivera has been fishing the Arthur Kill and decked a keep between 30 and 36 inches on three successive nights.

"You can tell the bass are around, because we sold out of eels over the weekend," said Tim Riley at Fishtales Bait and Tackle. Tim told me he got reports of good bass fishing pushing out into the bay over the weekend after some red hot fishing in New York Harbor. The shop's top bottom fishing catch this past week was a good pull of porgies to 14-inches along with a 16-inch tog by Chris Chan.
