Up Front Bait and Tackle

October 15, 2018:
Rain, rain and wind was the report from Up Front Bait and Tackle. They told us the store got very little in the way of fishing reports this past week other than the bottom fishing which has been good when boats have been able to sail. On the up side the cooler weather is starting to push water temp down and this should trigger some movement on the baitfish which intern should start the bass moving.

One place that I did get a report of good striped bass fishing in New York Harbor was over at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Steve said the trick to picking up the stripers is to get out early before the boat traffic spooks the fish. Most anglers say they are reading plenty of fish, but they just won't hit. Since word got out on the fishing around the Statue of Liberty it's been a parking lot and this has been turning the bass off. Some weakfish and small blues are also mixing in with the bass along the lower side of Raritan Bay. Porgy fishing continues to be red hot and albies are also providing some good action. Steve said there are tons sea bass and tog on the reefs and anglers are looking forward to getting at them once their respective seasons reopen.

There is a nice mix of fish out there for anglers to choose from, said Steve over at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Plenty of short stripers with an occasional keeper mixed in are being seen by shoreline fishermen at Union Beach, Cliffwood Beach and Port Monmouth. Some bigger keepers are being caught after dark on eels and chunked bunker by boat fishermen fishing the same areas. Likewise better numbers of keepers are being caught around the Verrazano Bridge and in New York Harbor. He also mentioned some keeper weakfish being caught in Princess Bay, along with some good size weakfish being caught in the lower Raritan Bay.

We got another upbeat report when we spoke to the folks at Up Front Bait and Tackle. They told us schoolie size bass to 26 inches, 1- to 3-pound blues and some weakfish are hammering the schools of baitfish along the lower side of the bay. In addition some bigger keepers are being caught at night off Cliffwood, Union and Monmouth beaches on chunked bunker and worms. The store even had a report of a 40-pound bass being caught. On the down side the fluke fishing in the bay this past week was all shorts, they said.

"Saturday saw a nice uptick in the fishing after a week long layoff because of the weather," said Steve at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Snappers and cocktails are a plenty along the lower side of the bay hammering the peanut bunker and some stripers to 37 inches have started to mix in with them. He also mentioned some short and keeper fluke being caught in the Keyport area and in some of the creeks. Last but not least the Keyport snapper contest was a success on Saturday thanks to the better weather, Steve said.
