Upfront Bait and Tackle

The news of excellent bass fishing kept on coming when we spoke to the folks at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Here too the word was the early week action was in the bay on the troll, while Saturday saw some big bass being livelined in the ocean around the schools of bunker south of the Hook. Youngster Eli Schrager not only caught his first bass a 19-pounder, but the bass was also the biggest weighed in at the store this past week.

    Another person that told us of excellent striped bass fishing since mid week was Steve over at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Here too the word is eels and mojos are taking the majority of the bass. Steve also mentioned some albies still being caught off Sandy Hook. Sea bass have taken over the bottom fishing and there are plenty of blackfish around for the opener on Nvember 16, he added.

    Another place we got a report of better bass action was at Up Front Bait and Tackle. Steve said the bass have started to spread out and more bass are now being taken on the troll on spoons and mojos. "Bottom fishing has been very good however you have to pick through the small sea bass," he said. Outside boat fishermen have been into good catches of albies on Deadly Dicks and Avas. Boats anchoring up and chumming are also tangling with some monster blues, some of which are topping the 20-pound mark.

    Steve over at Up Front Bait and Tackle we were told of decent eeling for bass in the lower New York Harbor. Here to we were told the reports of bass being caught in Ambrose and the upper bay are starting to be heard. Blues mixed with albies are supplying some fishing in the bay and along the inshore waters, and a few hits were also reported off the beaches. Bottom fishing was a good mix of porgies, sea bass and tog as of Sunday. However, the clam shortage is driving the price of clams up. One theory is that since the passing eclipse the clams have gone deeper into the sand and are a lot harder to dig out.

    Steve at Up Front Bait and Tackle said he got reports of good bass fishing from New York Harbor to Union Beach. Bass to 30 pounds were caught by boat fishermen trolling and fishing live eels. Bass were also caught in the Arthur Kill. In addition he mentioned good porgy and tog fishing with tons of sea bass being recycled.
