Ramsey Outdoor

January 15, 2018:
The folks at Ramsey Outdoors said reports coming into the shop on Sunday indicated some of the smaller bodies of water were showing signs of water along the edges, but that should soon be ended with more cold this week. A couple of reports came in of perch and pickerel at Budd Lake, along with one northern. Local ponds and lakes like Horseshoe Lake showed good conditions. Sales on ice fishing tackle have been brisk at the shop, a good sign of something going on. We heard there were eight hand augers in the shop Sunday morning, and just one left on Monday – look for a new shipment to arrive soon.

"Ice fishing stuff is flying off the shelves," said Don at Ramsey Outdoors. "I'm waiting on an order now, but I've got some tip-ups and jigging outfits now. It's been good so far." He said the ice at Budd Lake, Cranberry Lake and Tilcon has been giving up perch, crappie and pickerel on wax worms, mousies (rat tail maggots) and Gulp! Not much reported on the big stuff just yet, but folks are out there giving it a go. Sadly, Don said there was a tragic snowmobile accident on the Jefferson side of Hopatcong on Sunday that kept folks away from that area.

A call to the folks at Ramsey Outdoors got word on ice fishing improvements in Northwest New Jersey. Don said some of the inner coves on the Jefferson side of Hopatcong have iced up and given up a walleye or two; not the center mind you, but a good deep freeze like we're having now could mean plenty of action in the coming weeks. Don said every little pond in the area has gotten some good ice on it and mousies and wax worms are leaving the shop and getting it done.

A call to the folks at Ramsey Outdoors got us a report of good striped bass fishing off the beaches along the northern coast. Tons of shorts along with some slots and keepers are giving beach fishermen action on just about anything they throw at them. On the down side the blackfishing has been hit or miss with some days seeing very good fishing, while other days the fishing has been slow.

The folks over at Ramsey Outdoors said they are hopeful that with the slight rise in water from the remaining melting snow, trout fishing will pick up. They said that reports of good striper fishing continues along the shorelines, but all small fish. They do want to remind everyone to use single hooks for a safer release of these fish so as to not harm them and yourself with treble hooks, adding that these fish are very frisky and can easily cause damage to themselves and you as they fight to get free.
