Gabriel Tackle

November 13, 2017:
At Gabriel Tackle, Frank said boat anglers are picking up some really nice-sized striped bass. Bait seemed to be better than artificials, especially in the surf. He said Pete McKelvey stopped in with a pair of nice bass that were more than 30 pounds each. Vinnie Weisel weighed an 8.8-pound, 30-12-inch striped bass for the shop's fall striped bass tournament that runs through December 15.

At Gabriel Tackle, Frank said the Point Pleasant Canal has had very good fishing at night for stripers on eels and artificials. During the day, the canal is giving up nice blackfish. Blackfish are biting at Manasquan Inlet as well. Green crabs are doing the trick both places. A few guys getting keeper stripers on the beach, and he said it's a shame more folks aren't fishing because the fish are there. Clams were the bait of choice, and one angler told him there were a ton of sand eels in the surf. The weather kept the smaller boats at the dock, he said. He had started a tournament at the shop but the slow-to-develop bass run has been a problem.

At Gabriel Tackle, Frank said the sea bass reports from the reefs were very good. He had a few reports of stripers on the beach from customers who went out. Fabian had a couple of nice keepers that he caught on clam, Frank said. There are some blues and small stripers still hanging around the Route 35 Bridge; the nighttime bite is best. They have plenty of bait as well as the tackle you will need after the weekend's lousy weather moves out.
