Canal Bait & Tackle

November 13, 2017:
The guys at Canal B&T in Sagamore told me that there are still lots of small stripers in the Canal, but they haven't seen a keeper in while now. There is still lots of bait in the Canal though, sea herring and smaller stuff too. Your best bet for finding that last Cape keeper is to fish the creeks around high water.

Canal B&T in Sagamore said that a push of big blues came into the Canal on Saturday, they were following a large school of sea herring. There were some bass mixed-in too. The blues were in the 9- to 12-pound class and the bass were anywhere between 18 inches and 18 pounds. The beaches are loaded with small bass right now, there's still time for some fishing!

Canal B&T in Sagamore said the Canal has been loaded with small bass and a few scattered keepers, some guys have been carrying lighter rigs and having a ball with this smaller class of bass. Albies are still riding the currents in and out of the Ditch, they are regularly making their way as far east as the bulkheads, and guys are chasing them all over the place. A few blues have also been charging through randomly. Everyone is wondering if we'll see one more push of bigger bass, the clock is ticking. Tuna guys on Stellwagen have been talking about big schools of large bass on horse mackerel out there; if they get pushed in here by this storm, things could get very interesting.

Canal B&T in Sagamore said the Canal bite is still good as long as you don't mind weeding through the little guys. Albies are still making runs into the Canal most days. Out on the beaches, the action has been pretty good—lots of schoolies there too—but a fair number of fish into the mid 30-inch class are being taken as well.

The guys over at Canal B&T in Sagamore said albies have become the focus of many Canal rats this week as the little tunas have made their way all the way through the Canal. Bass fishing has been mostly small schoolies and occasional keeper-sized fish. A few bigger ones in the 20's have been taken on jigs at night, the biggest of the week was a 33-pounder. Guys fishing the local beaches have been doing okay too. There's lots of bait on the beaches, most of the fish have been small and there have been some blues out there as well.
