Bernie's Bait & Tackle

November 13, 2017:
Over at Bernie's B&T on Emmons Ave in Sheepshead Bay the staff reported bass have finally made their way into the NY Bight. So far the top method is to troll bunker spoons or Mojo rigs. Be prepared to go deep along the 60 to 70-ft. ranges. Bass in the 20 to 40-pound class are not uncommon. A 53-pounder was weighed in at the shop during the week. In the late afternoon and early evening you can work the bay waters between the Belt Parkway and the pier with clams. Fish there are averaging 24 to 29-inches. On Thursday morning, Jimmy and Michael Giordano from the shop started out at daybreak and targeted the "Lump" that's located between Breezy Point and the Rockaway Reef. They drifted back and forth with bucktails and scored several keepers to 25-pounds and only had two shorts in the mix. On the blackfish front, action has picked up in the bay but most are short. The recent cold front should cool the waters and bring more keepers to the inside. Scup are holding on but are fading fast. You need to work the bay bridges and waters with rough bottom structure. Sea bass action has been so-so at the Rockaway Reef. Reports came in of herring at the Coney Island Pier. Drop by and check out the Fall Specials. Get a free G-Loomis hat with the purchase of any G-Loomis rod. The shop also has special reduced prices on select Shimano, Daiwa, Accurate and Abu Garcia reels. The shop's new hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Over at Bernie's B&T on Emmons Ave in Sheepshead Bay Jimmy Giordano and the staff reported the water temps are still in the mid sixties so most species have not packed up and left town just yet. Jimmy and his friends chased albies in Ambrose Channel a few times during the week and scored on 20 each day. They employed 34 to 1-ounce Deadly Dicks. Joey Buonocore from the shop said he found albies and blues at the tip of Breezy Point Jetty. The best time to make your move is at first light or dusk. Most blues in the area are cocktails to 2-pounds with a few larger ones in the mix. Porgies are a can't miss proposition. Blackfish are in excellent supply but most are shorts. Try the Rockaway Reef. Ed Parker went there and encountered loads of shorts, but came by the shop to weigh in a keeper of 11.14-pounds. After weigh-in he released the big boy. The local reefs are holding decent size sea bass with larger ones being reported at the Jersey Reef. Ambrose Channel has some bass and anglers are employing trolled bunker spoons or large swimming plugs. A customer worked the channel and nailed a 40-pounder.

Over at Bernie's B&T on Emmons Ave in Sheepshead Bay Jerry Rahn and the staff reported porgies refuse to call it quits. They are everywhere although the bay bite is slowing down. The best scup fishing is occurring on the outside at Breezy Point and beyond. Kingfish and spots have been congregating around the Marine Parkway Bridge, while other local bridges saw a few Sheepshead being caught. On Sunday morning there was a very brief one hour bass bite at the jetty. Anglers fishing near the Statue of Liberty reported bass were jumping on live eels. Weakfish have appeared in the back of Jamaica Bay. Blues have become intense from the reef to the VZ Bridge. The schools are composed of medium to large choppers. Large bodies of false albies have been moving through. There is plenty of bait in the water including schools of mullets. Some sea bass can be found on the reef but there are very few quality fish.
