Betty & Nick's Bait & Tackle

September 24, 2018:
John at Betty & Nick's said anglers were "absolutely crushing" bluefish in the 3- to 5-pound range at Island Beach State Park on Sunday, with a few 8-pound blues mixed in. Mullet was taking lots of fish and anglers were coming in for more bait and heading back out. The fish were from the bathing beaches down to the inlet. Anglers checking in reported plenty of pods of bait and that small Kastmaster lures were working for those who prefer throwing metals. The action should keep improving with the amount of life in the surf.

John at Betty & Nick's said the weather was perfect for surf fishing over the weekend and the results proved it with the good amount of fish caught during the kids' fishing tournament at Island Beach State Park. He said Brian K, one of his regulars, was by the shop on Sunday to get white paddletails because he heard they were working and reported back that it was accurate: Brian caught six small stripers to 18 inches, a few bluefish and a few fluke, all on the white paddletails. The mullet run is firing things up.

John at Betty & Nick's said the Barnegat Inlet area at Island Beach State Park has bluefish in the 6-pound range and tons and tons of bait. The pocket had a typical bluefish blitz on Saturday as the northeast winds were cranking up for the weekend storm. He is crossing his fingers that the hurricane does not mess things up.

John at Betty & Nick's said there is a lot of life in the surf, including some nice fluke and some bonito as well. Bob stopped in to weigh a 3-pound, 8-ounce fluke on Saturday that he caught in the surf at Gillikins on an Electric Chicken Gulp, and Jeff was in with a 2-pound, 4-ounce fluke he caught in the surf as the weekend was getting under way. False albacore are showing up, so get the Hogy epoxy jigs, he said.

"I'm sure there are still fluke and blues being caught of the surf based on the tremendous amount of Gulp and mullet we are going through," John at Betty & Nick's said. He was not getting a lot of reports back, however. There is a small hiccup coming with the heat this week, "but hopefully we get into a cooling trend after that," he said.
